MARYSVILLE---Since our last state highway progress report for The Nugget, in -1960, several projects have been completed in Nevada County and a number of “Completed in fdarch of last year was the $17, 000.in“stallation of traffic signals and safety lighting in Grass Valley at the intersection of Main St. (State Sign Route 20) and Auburn St. (SSR 49), and at Auburn St. and Col_ fax Ave, During last summer selected portions of SSR. 20, SSR 49, and US 40--on the twolane section between Soda Springs and Donner Summit“were resurfaced. In September the relocation of SSR 89 was completed at a cost of $885 , 000 from US 40 to north of HoBart Mills--a 6.6 mile stretch _ of new two-lane highway west of the old road which will be flooded by the Prosser Creek reservoir. And in December of 1961 ‘the new Bear River bridge on SSR 49 at the Nevada-Placer county line was finished at a cost of $245,000. Finished early this month was the widening of Sacramento St. (SSR 20/49) in Nevada City between Pine St. and Searles Ave., a $16,000 job. The bulk of current construction in Nevada County continues to be on US 40 (Interstate 80) freeway projects, The two excavation jobs which are taking US 40 over the Sierra summit on a new alignment to the north of the present road are expectedto be done sometime this fall. They total $10 million for the 10 1/2 miles. A single contract for the base and surfacing of the entire new route is expected to be advertised for bids late this year or early in 1963, and will take two construction seasons to complete, Two other US 40 freeway jobs are underway, through they lie mostly in Placer County: 1) From Emigrant Gaptothe junction with SSR 20, 5.4 miles--an $8 million contract with completion estimated for Fall 1963; andfrom the SSR 20 junction to Hampshire Rocks, 6,3 miles--an $11 million contract with completion anticipated in late 1964. Also under construction is the continuing reconstruction and widening of SSR 49 between the South Fork Yuba River and North San Juan. Portions were done in previous years and additional work is scheduled for 1963.
