For that reason, sound land use planning covering these revenue and recreation producing public lands is a real necessity, It: has been assumed by many that the prime objective of the Forest Service is to produce timber and to protect that timber from being burned. Timber production is recognized to be an important facet of our mountain economy. More accurate timber inventories and growth studies made in recent years have resulted in appreciable increases in the allowable annual cut of National Forest timber, Areas long occupied by brushfields are being cleared and reforested under a planned program. Current burns are being treated promptly for timber salvage, soil erosion control, disposal of flamable debris, and reforestation. Forage for domestic livestock in the. fornt’of gt ass and browse species is produced on the public lands. Those same lands also produce water for domestic, agricultural and hydroelectric purposes, as wellas the habitat for wildlife and fish. Multiple use planning and management recognizes that all these renew able resources are related; and serves to keep each of them producing on a sustained basis for the public good. The plans are designed to providea pattern of orderly development and atthe same time coordinate the various uses of the land. They describe the status and amount Of each of the natural resources as well as the problemsassociated with land occupancy, transportation and fire control. In addition they contain specific coordinating instructions and management direction for each of the individual management zones, While the plans are intended for use within the Forest Service, we realize that effective management ofthe public resources is of concernto many other agencies and groups, and is possible only with their active cooperation and the successful management of land under their jurisdiction, T his is particularly so here where such a complicated inas, campgrounds, parking areas, trials, organization sites, etc. Timber to be cut will be based on the recreation needs, A strip between the water ‘s edge and recreational developments will be kept. in as natural state as possible, Plans will include supplying. of adequate water and san= itation facilities. Si ae recreation area plans are be ing made covering other “aréas to be devéloped, such as Faucherie Lake, Stampede and Prosser Reservoirs, Sim-= ilar plans are underway for the Placer and Yuba County Water Agency proposed projects. The department members have three over age units in the fire house and four overworked mechanics who put in overtime to keep the heaps running. They have drooled at other first line equipment owned by the state and adjacent cities! But when the fire equipment people rolled up before the fire house with a real first line pumper it had an $18,000 price tag on it. It was frustrating to say the least. They had a caucus and after a lot of converstaion decided that they had the know -how, the ability todesign and build a better piece of equipment to fight the ty pe of fires they would be called upon to combat than SCHOOLS (Continued from page A -3) will become acute during the next two years, The people of Nevada County must realize that the construction and sale of houses will produce continuing problems in the field of education and in other services. The Statewide average, for school planning purposes, allows 1,5 children (kindergarten through 12th grade) perhouse. A $20,000 house is assessed at about 25 percent or $5,000. Using an operational tax rate of $1.00 elementary and $1.00 for high school, this produces only $50 at each level forthe educational purposes. Approximately 54 man-hours of labor have been expended on the unit, donated by the members of the department. The district officials considers that they have saved the taxpayers $16,015 from the cost of a purchased unit, and they feel this unit has the beef to handle the roughest jobs, especially the hard to get to places that are short of water, It is by far not the slowest unit in the department, and it will handle its load at legal emergency speed, It is with this can-do attitude that the Gold Flat department hopes to keep abreast to Nevada County's fastest growing fire district.
