Bill Klenper Bothered By Ghosts
TAILINGS

By Hollis Bentley
Bill Klemper had a violent past.
In flames he'd left Michigan Bluff;
in flames he'd left Hangtown,
Moore'sFlat, Cherry Hill, Meadow Lake and Orleans. He'd
watched in fascination as flames
lit the night sky and reflected in
the waters of San Francisco Bay.
And now Bill Klemper was leaving
Red Dog when only the first cries
of FIRE! were echoing through the
town.
Bill Klemper was bothered by
dead but of the "might have been”
ghosts, His weren't ghosts of the
problem. Having given up gold
mining, Klemper was hired by a
local barber to help in the growing business. Bill worked nights as
late as the customers lasted.
This particular night was late,
nearing midnight. His last custo~
mer was a man who'd barely
made the chair for his load of
downed liquor. The man was im-~

job because he drank too much,
He'dtried many, many things and
failed. He'd come to the mountains for gold but found the work
of mining too hard, And each
time he'd left a job behind,
plagued by failure and a new
ghost, he tried to burn the ghost
mediately asleep, snoring and
twitching some, then quiet.
WhenBill had finished shaving
the man's face and trimming his
hair, he found he could not stir
him. The man was dead.

Bill c losed the shop. He was
confused. He knew what had hapand escape. He was sure only fire
would free him. He never quite
succeeded for as time passed Bill's
ghosts always found him again and
they became more numerous.
