es In the gold-laden days of the 1850's the fortunes of Grass Valley and Wells Fargo were insep~ arable. Both the town and the first Wells Fargo mantorun an agency in it were kept busy in 1855. Twice that fateful year Grass Valley was threatened with extinc~tion. In the Spring it was financial failure; in the Fall, fire. Alonzo Delano was already famous in California for his writing and sketches whena notice in the Grass Valley Telegraph mentioned he was doing business “at the Wells Fargo and Company Express and Banking Exchange opposite Beatty House on Main Street where he occasionally ‘expresses’ the ideas that have made him so generally known in the state. " He wastobe first of a long line of agents who served the community for more than half a century. (The last Wells Fargo record from Grass Valley is dated.1910. ) In 1855 financial panic swept the nation. The Ohio and Mississippi railroad failed and with it the hopes of many investors. In the disaster that followed, the firm of Pagé, Bacon & Co. of St. Louis and its major subsidiary in San Francisco were swept away. Word spread that other San Francisco banks and their offices in the Sierra diggings would suspend payments, In Grass Valley a frightened, excited group of citizens stormed the Wells Fargo agency. Let the Grass Valley Telegraph (February 27, 1855) tell the story: "The office of Wells Fargo and Company in this place has not been closed during the panic. For a moment, owing to a misunderstood dispatch, the agent Mr. Delano was a little disconcerted but that passed. He mounted the counter and told people to come on, he would pay out to the last his own private property should go. This, however, proved unnecessary as he had more than, sufficient on hand, The confidence in this house was fully restored, “ Two weeks later Delano was elected first treasurer of Grass Valley. ‘ Later that year -in September -the whole town burned down in one hour and 15 minutes. Nothing was left of 300 buildings covering 30 acres. Estimated damage: $400,000. Still reeling from the earlier financial panic and stunned by this new blow, many citizens were ready to abandon the jinxed town. But about sunrise the morning after the fire, a strange apparition appeared across the smoking ruins. “Something was moving down the hill from the West end of town, " writes a historian. “It was a frame shanty on rollers.
