Jewelry, furniture artist
They honeymooned romantically in Holland. . .living in an
old windmill in a tiny hamlet
on the outskirts of Amsterdam.
Eban and Mina Haskell are
now in Nevada City. . .remodeling a leasehold atop Tribulation Trail for their permanent
home and Eban’s studio workshop.
During their six months in Holland. . .they learned to ice skate
and did a whole book-ful of interesting things; and, Eban took
advantage also of two fine opportunities . . . he worked parttime for a prominent jeweler and
some of the time in a cabinet
maker’s shop.
Eban, who has lived in Nevada
City for a bit over three years,
is gaining marked recognition of
his designs in jewelry and for
his stunning creations in custom furniture, So much so, in
fact, that he has just this month
walked off with second place in
the jewelry division at Cal Expo! He also sells his works in
gems and minerals and finegrained woods to outstanding
dealers in Monterey, Carmel,
San Francisco and Sacramento
. to mention just a few of his
primary outlets; and he has been
seen in many shows of great
prominence .. including the
well known Crocker Art Gallery
in Sacramento and the national ,
tour of “Goldsmiths ’70.”" A one
man show of his fine furniture
is in the planning for the Crock.
er Art Gallery .. and, he is
to teach a class in jewelry design and construction at the
evening school bySierraCollege
at NUHS next spring.
Eban’s father is a jeweler and
it was from him that Eban’s
talent and artistry was sparked
into a full-time profession. His
earlier work in restoration of
. antique furnture prompted his in'‘ terest in and enthusiasm for the
. design of furniture, Of his vocational pursuits Eban says,
**Many peope in Nevada City
are wearing my jewelry and
using my furniture .. if I
had a job I didn’t like these
would be my hobbies. ’’
From earlier work in restoring antique furniture, . .and
this was in San Francisco and
*‘down home’? in Santa Barbara
. came Eban’s idea _ that
*‘someone must make the furniture of today that in generations to come will be the antiques
of the future’? and so it has
developed that his creative work
in furniture for the strictly
custom trade stunning pieces
for home or office are all designed and built to last and last.
These are the pieces that will
be loved and cared for ever so
gently by many generations.
The Haskells are beautiful
and exciting people ..deeply
involved in the~business of living and creating,
Mina is creating a gracious
and interesting home well does
she know that age adds charm to
things. other than cheese and
wine! As the present remodeling turmoil dies down and she
and Eban can settle into the business of living at No. 200 Tribulation Trail. . . it is Eban’sfertile imagination, his skilled and
sensitive hands and trained artistry that will turn the place into a veritable hive of industry.
Mina has called Nevada City
*thome”’ all of her life. She is
the daughter of Frank Van Vliet
who is in charge of the evening
classes offered by Sierra College at Nevada Union High
School; and she works in the
offices of Nevada County’s
district attorney, Harold Berliner,
If you are
asking Eban to do a bit of jewelry or furniture for you somethinking about
time soon .. it would be well
to phone 265-5798 and arrange
an appointment. As he says..
“it is absolutely necessary to
have dialogue with people before
I can design anything for them,
I must know their ideas and philosophies in order to create
shapes that will be pleasing and
beautiful to them.’’
Haskell hospitality is cordial
and warm, you will enjoy your
meeting with Eban and Mina,
You’ll find it difficult to leave
for what you will find there
will excite the senses and bring
another dimension into your life,
