The Robinsons are certainly in a fair mood this year. I've entered the cooking competition once again. Mike, my middle brother, has entered his chocolate chip cookies in the junior competition and little brother David has entered one of his drawings \in the junior painting competition, You know, actually participating in the fair in some manner makes it more interesting and exciting. There is going to be a special display of the moon rock this year that should prove interesting. Did you know that people in other countries think more of our achievement than we do? The main display at the Cctober Beer Festival in Germany wasa gigantic replica of the moon with our astronauts on it! * * * The Robert Paasch family of Chicago Park are sure to carry away quite a few blue ribbons in the sheep competition this year. Mr, and Mrs, Paasch are entering fifteen Sussex sheep. Their two boys, Ray and Steve, are entering their own sheep. Steve has ten Hampshire sheep entries. Last year his sheep were shown at Cal Expo. The family says that raising sheepis only a hobby. KK * At last, at last, at last! The county has finally decided to fix that dangerous turn-off to You Bet Road. Who knows how many accidents or near accidents have taken place at that blind turn? I remember that when I was going to Nevada Union the bus drivCedar Ridge-Chicago ~ Park and news. By Terri Robnwon Peardale er wouldn't take us down You Bet because he was afraid of that turn-off; he almost had an accident there once. We had to walk two miles home from Colfax Highway. Of course it doesn't matter much now because we don't have buses at all. * * * Mr. Val Julian's parents from Pennsylvania are visiting this week, Val and his family are looking forward to his mother's delicious Italian cooking. Mrs. Julian says she always stocks up on plenty of flour and yeast and other staples before her mother-in-law visits. * * * The Chicago Park Garden Club will meet the first week in September. * * Herb Moran, who was operated on in Martinez last week, is recovering very well. * Mrs. Mildred Mills has been transfered from Sierra Memorial Hospital to the Sacramento Medical Center. She is recovering after a serious illness. * * * The Talking Pines Church is no longer holding regular weekly services. The church is working on a special project at the moment and will begin regular services at a later date. * * Valerie Juvinall is home from UCLA where she was studying Dramatic Arts. She will continue her studies at Sierra College this year, North San Juan News By Idahel Covert I was reminded this morning of a previous column of mine in which I enumerated some basic needs of this area, in which I inadvertently put water in third. place after schools and housing. My friend, Louise Dudley, properly informed me that neither schools nor housing are possible in acommunity without water. I am aware of this, believe me. Living as I do in French Corral, the driest section of the whole San Juan Ridge, it's impossible to forget for a minute. The water table has evidently lowered this year, as my own well which is not too good even in a normal year must be carefully watched and the water rationed every day. Besides being a source of constant annoyance and depression, caused by having to live in such drag surroundings, this lack of water isa real danger. My own well will run for just 17 minutes before it goes dry. Then I must wait at least an hour before there is water again. If a fire started here I'd just have to give up and get out. This is true of most of the residents of the ridge, with the exception of the fortunate ones who have good springs or prior water rights on the only stream that runs all year here. . Shady Creek. Even these people would be out of luck in a really big forest fire. I consider this matter of getting a reliable water system here not only a matter of practicality; there is also a moral question involved. What right do opponents of the water district have to condemn all the rest of us to live this way? Especially when there is a remedy which would benefit all of us and not just the big property owners? Furthermore, while I'm at it, I want to say that the ecology issue which is being touted as the big reason why some people want to scuttle the water project is just a noble-sounding smoke screen to conceal the real reason, which is tokeep this area back in the 19th Century and assure that anyone who buys property here in the future belongs to a certain group which wants to live in that century. Well, to each his own...and if some of my friends want to live under those conditions which seem so glamourous to them, it's okay with me. But I've lived that way before, and I don't care to go back to it. Since when, in this country, does any group have the right to The Nevada County Nugget Wednesday, Aug. 23, 19729 Vital Statistics HOPPLER, Dr. C. Kuith, M. D., 49, died August 10.
