Fire, dreaded enemy of the forest, hit in seperate slaches of destruction through Nevada County and the Tahoe National Forest this week. North San Juan for the fourth time in its history was saved from destruction by valiant efforts of numerous volunteer fire departments. They rushed to the community's aid Sunday afternoon. Grass Valley last week fought off a fire on McCourtney road at the edge of the city that burned more than 500 acres. Although all homes were saved the beauty that perished in flame cannot be replaced in many resident's lifetime. Again volunteer es departments responded to a call for aid. The Peardale-Chicago Park Fire Department kept the blaze under control, 7 although several acres of grazing land also burned. Forestry division crews aided. while fighting the M¢Courtney Rd. fire near Grass Valley. Left The two largest fires still blaze out of control. toright are; Evin Thomas, project foreman; Willard Weselski, ' _ The Donner Ridge fire in eastern Nevada County cut off power to the Donner Lake, associate ranger; and Paul Sparks. It has swept across 35,000 acres in ali at : : Tahoe Natjonal Forest, threatening the Donner Lake area Sunday, destroying 150,roa , ae! 000,000 board feet of timber valued at $3,000,000. : The Foresthill fire in Tahoe National Forest has also burned 33,000 acres of good timberland. It is now six miles south of Emigrant Gap. The Donner Ridge blaze is 60'per cent contained, the Foresthill fire only 50 per cent contained. About 2000 persons were fighting each fire. Division of Forestry crews aided by military and volunteer fighters expected to have the North San Juan blaze under control by early this morning. Yesterday only five per cent was uncontrolled. ‘ The North San Juan fire, which started by incendiary means in two spots along Tyler road near Highway 49 Sunday afternoon, has burned 5580 acres. More than 200 firefighters have been on the line, in addition to the volunteer department aid given North SanJuan itself.
