THIS SKETCH of Ott's Assay Office as it would appear as part of a new
post office in Nevada City was shown to the city council Monday night
by John Sbaffi and Alfred Heller. They were representing the Nevada
Company, a local business partnership, which has proposed a study of
the idea. The two existing buildings would be kept and restored, anda
one story wing (left) would be added, according to the plan of Skidmore,
Owings, and Merrill, architects. There would be parking for 30 cars.
Doris Foley also appeared before the council and objected to converting
the building to a post office. She said private parties should be givena
chance tobuy the building, retaining the antique shop and creating rooms
to honor Nevada City pioneers.

Taxi Stand Fee Raised
Nevada City Council this week
held the first reading of an ordinance amendment to change the
fee for taxi parking stands in the
city from $3 to $8 per month,
Bill Akers, owner of Thumper
Cab Co, of Nevada City appeared
before the council Monday night
to protest the move. He said he
thought $3 was too low, but $8
was too high, He offered to
compromise at $5,
City manager Beryl Robinson
explained the $8 figure had been
arrived at by taking the monthly
meter revenue and dividing it by
thenumber of meters in the city.
Averaged out each meter makes
$8 per month exclusive of fines.
By removing a meter to allow a
taxi stand it costs the city $8.
The council refused to act on
Akers’ request for a compromise
onthe taxi stand fee and later in
the session held the first reading
of the ordinance establishing the
$8 monthly charge.
