Any greenskeeper can tell you.
Late August and September are
critical months in your lawn care
calendar. This is especially true
in California where long summer
drought: often‘ combines with
weed and pest to leave the neglected lawn something less than
beautiful.
In view of the hazard, the

Jawn this fall, you’d do well to
hear what the nurserymen say.
First and foremost, of course,
is continued watering: But since
compaction usually reaches its
peak in late summer and fall, the
hurserymen recommend spiking
with an aerator to aid in water
penetration.
Seeond most important factor
is adequate food, and if you’ve
failed to supply it since spring,
make up for the oversight with a
generous feeding now. Feed
lightly thereafter at month or
six-week intervals until grass
goes dormant.
There’s more to_ late Summer
lawn care than food
however. Much ‘more. Where
weeds appear (and where -don’t
they?) or pests show up, you'll
want to knock them even before
you feed. If any crabgrass weathered your spring attempt to wipe
it out, finish it off before it goes
to seed, Your nurseryman . will

Other weeds can be handled

really no excuse for tolerating
them.

rye or other cool season grass to

Hi Students Might Look To
High school students returning

Recent. surveys indicate that
that 15,000 new agricultural college graduates are needed every

7,000 are available. Too many
students consider agriculture as

-performed well in expre 1 tests by University of
California scientists;
Vernon M. Stern, Robert van
den Bisch, and Harold T. Reynolds, ‘all of the Riverside campus,
report that the new insecticide,
dylox, at*low to moderate dosages is only slightly toxic to lady
beetles which are useful in controlling pests. of alfalfa, chiefly
aphids.
By comparison, a DDT-toxaphene mixture, DDT alone, parathion, and Sevin caused marked
reductions in the number of lady
beetles and other beneficial insects that prey upon field crop
pests, the scientists state. ‘
“Since dylox is also relatively
nontoxic to honeybees, the insecticide can be used to control alfalfa seed pests when the seed
fields are in bloom,” they suggest.
Their work is part of a continuing search for methods of integrating chemical and_ biological
control of insect pests—utilizing
the efficient products of pesticide chemistry and yet preserving the natural conditions. of
equilibrium that? have existed
