According to the state, Nevada county is assessing its real property for tax purposes at 23.3 per cent of market value. The statewide weighted average is 23.2 per cent, Nevada county's percentage actually is down one full point from the 24.3 listed by the state a year ago. Other Sierra counties had these percentages: El Dorado, 22.5 per cent, down 2.5; Placer, 22.5, same; Sierra, 25.0, up .7; Yuba, 23.2, down 1.4. ‘Thirty-one . counties moved closer to the 25 per cent assessment goal required in 1971, the state said, . Twenty-five others were down, most of them fractions of a percentage point. Two remained unchanged. "An assessor is on target if he is within a percentage point of his announced ratio or the statewide average," Leake said. Nine assessors legally chose a lesser percentage than 25 per cent of market value this year. They are Stanislaus, 20; Fresno, 22; Napa, 22 1/2; Marin, Imperial, Siskiyou and Trinity, 23; Sacramento, 23.6; and Humboldt, 24 per cent. Tiny Trinity County was ordered to show cause Sept. 16 why it should not bring its assessment level to the statewide average. Trinity was the first county in three years to fall outside the Board's "tolerance zone" of four percentage points either. way from the state average, The effect of the board order would be to force Trinity to add enough assessable property value to the roll to bring its level to 23 per cent. The board's final findings measure each county's total taxable wealth for school aid and other purposes, Sign now for annual Labor Day trail ride The Nevada County Horsemen The trail for the coming ride has been ridden by the trail We were pleased to-be invited by Malcom Hammill to attend the opening ceremonies of the county fair last week. This is always an exciting occasion, and from the first hour on, it was correctly predicted that attendance would be higher. The attitude of fierce loyalty and love for our beautiful fairgrounds and the fair itself, is a heartwarming thing, indeed. Everyone looks forward to it, and everyone goes. As an added attraction, there will be a portion of the room designated as "Celebrity's Salon.’ Here visitors and customers will be able to view and buy such items as the necktie that Ted Kohler was wearing when he was named both county. clerk and recorder; the shirt that John Gallegos was wearing when he was named Young Man of the Year inSouthern California; the sox Babe Childers was wearing when he made his first hole-in-one; and the pen that Judge Verle Gray uséd to sign many of his court documents. For a very different type of rummage sale, andafree cup of coffee, plan to attend on October 3 and 4, We still take great pride in looking up at the flower baskets that some of our merchants have cared for so faithfully. The ones to bloom most profusely are these at Alma's Beauty Shop on Commercial Street. She gives credit to the lady upstairs who apparently waters them regularly. Take a look at Howard Keene's, His are beautiful, too, as are those at Peterson Pro. ducts. Dick Willey has done well with his baskets, even though they are quite high. PG&E has been faithful about watering theirs, too. Some merchants did not get theirs, but the project is not finished, by any means, Upon the secretary's return from her June vacation, she found many had died and were turning brown, It was evident that there was difficulty in the watering process, and this problem will be resolved. As was predicted at the outset, it will probably take a few years to get them establishe and growing well, Please be patient --we'll work it out. We furnished 40 packets of literature to as many guests who came to the area for a meeting and pleasure last Saturday. Melba Hughes, of Grass Valley, was chairman of the event held for the Sacramento Begonia Society. The ladies picnicked in Memorial Park and attended the fair as part of their activities. Has anyone thought about what you would like to see developed as a theme for one of our July. 4th celebrations? Chairman of the 1970 parade, Chris Schaaf, will welcome suggestions from the public, and already has received some excellent ideas that could be utilized and enjoyed by the public, Call the chamber of commerce or the Mother Lode Bank any weekday afternoon, or write your suggestion for a theme or any part of the holiday activities, and send it to the chamber in the city hall. Mr. Schaaf just might give the donor of a winning suggestion, a place of honor in the parade. Events that are approaching within the next few months include the Costitution Day parade, and we help chairman Bill Lambert with some of the smaller details, Lambert promises an even better parade with ‘lots of bands and several couples who will dance the minuet in the street during the ceremonies that follow.
