273-2934 By Fay M. Dunbar Nevada countys big commu_ hity “event, the 17th District Fair is behind us. Everyone who participated, and that's a lot of people, have interesting memories. I think the Fair couldn't go on if, besides Malcolm Hammill, we didn't have the workers like Jack Bixler running for extra ribbons and getting lights and locks and water taps back in operation. And I'm sure the Home Economics Building couldn't function without Mrs. Loveta Hornsby also of Rough and Ready. I think the first of the week before the Fair opens is as exciting as the Fair itself. Everyone is working so feverishly and you can see the empty buildings blossoming into a full blown Fair. : ’ Winning, of couse, is always memorable. Mrs, Emile Brolin is very proud of the hand crocheted Afghan which won her.a blue ribbon. Nick Vogt, “who usually has several pictures entered, has been so busy with the cross country track event, new with the Fair this year, that he only got one picture entered. Young Nick has had to move into the advanced division which has much keener competition. His beautiful watercolor of the Vogt ranch won third place. Mrs. Lucille McCrea.entered an oil painting of downtown Rough and Ready in 1857%-with interesting three diWon a third place and the Lizzie Glotzmier Trophy for the best Nevada County: Scene. Mrs. Elaine Vogt, many times a baked goods sweepstakes winner has been so busy with her new home this. year that she thinks we'll have a new winner. The Rough and Ready Grange Feature Booth took a fourth place with a most interesting subject Dynamic Retirement." Mr. and Mrs, James Lawson cochairmen of the Booth Committee asked many questions throughout the county fo collect -the astonishing facts about the "dynamic" senior citizens. They found that 70% of the Real Estate personnel of the county are over 50, 45% of the membership of the counties mens service club are over 55, 80% of all ‘hospital auxiliary workers are over 55, 35% of our folk dancers are over 55, 65% of our bowlers are of retirement age, 33% of all church members are over 60, most ‘church workers are retirement age and senior citizens own é majority of the counties 2,729 living and travel trailers. The Grange Ladies Garden Display "Cool, Calm, and Collected" won a blue ribbon with Mrs. Mary Monetas flowers, Mrs, Donnis Davis fountain and the hard work of Mrs. Myrtle Hester and Mrs, Fay Dunbar. The ladies had the help of Mr. _ Davis, Mr, Hester, and Mr. Don Long. At the group meeting on Tuesday the ladies decided not to let the District Fair down even tho’ the committee chairman -had given up on her job. So the four ladies “put their shoulder to the wheel!’ and came home with the blue ribbon. "The Rough and Ready Fire Dept. had some new conveniences for their pie and cake concession. Their booth was, out on the road toward the barns and did a brisk business. Rough and Ready 4-Hers particpated heartily in many events but judging is still incomplete and the only awards I know of locally are for showmanship. Kathy Fitzke won for dairy, Nola Vogt for sheep and John Prochaska for beef. * * OK The John Browns, recently of Cupertino, have moved a trailer onto their property in the Wildwood Acres area to use while ‘they are building their new home there. ; * * * The Neil Sandersons of Eureka were guests of the Willis Perrys last -week, Mrs. June Sanderson is the Perrys granddaughter.'
