Politics in California are off to a rapid start this election year. Campaigns usually are kicked off over the Labor Day weekend, but this year they seem tohave continued through the summer without losing steam in the primary election...It was a.firm ~ handshake with Attorney General Stanley Mosk Thursday afternoon at the home of Nevada County District Attorney HaroldBerliner, Local law enforcement officers were allthere to pay their respects. The attorney general was closeted with a phone much of the time, for his opponent is waging a free-swinging campaign (opponent Thomas Coakley was the first candidate to stump Nevada County more than a week ago), and the charges and challenges must be answered from wherever the attorney general is campaigning atthetime. A short press conference, then a short visit te blevada County's fair, then Attorney General Mosk was oft for other cities in his campaign... We ex pected to meet John Busterud, campaigning for state treasurer, Thursday evening. But the candidate had been detained in Fresno, where his reception had been beyond the expectations of his campaign managers. Campaigning in a house trailer with his family, Busterud had received excellent publicity around the state. He arrived Friday and spent many hours at the. fair...Then yesterday, the third state candidate to tour the county — in five days arrived with Amy Nygard for an introduction andchat. CAMPAIGNING...John Busterud, at the driver's seat, motors his family around California in his campaign to become state treasurer. The Busterud trailer spent Saturday night in Nevada County while the candidate and his family enjoyed the Nevada County Fair. No Go Carts On Roads! GRASS. VALLEY ---Lt. Wallihan, commander of the California Highway Patrol's Grass Valley Area, reminded residents that it is illegal to operate go-carts on public streets or highways. "These small motorized vehicles are barred from pub= lic roads because they do not comply with vehicle code requirements for lights, brakes, turn signals, horns and mufflers," he said. "Even if go-carts could be ‘legally equipped, the driver 3];w Ould be required to have a valid operator's license. " He also pointed out that that operation of go-carts on ‘public streetsis extremely hazardous. It is difficult for the automobile driver to see the carts because of their low silhouette, "Parents should realize that they are criminally liable if they allow their youngsters to operate these go-carts illegally. I urge them to make sure that use of these vehiclesis restricted to private property, where the chance of a tragic accident is reduced," Republican Candidate Visits Fair GRASS VALLEY ---John A. Busterud, Republican nominee for state treasurer, attending the County Fair in Grass Valley, stated Saturday, “Governmental economay, taxes and fiscal responsibility are the leading issues in the fall election. " Demonstrating his belief that the people of California should know their officials, Busterud, with his wife and three children, is traveling some,30,000 miles up and down the State in a 26-foot motor home, “This gives me an opportunity," Busterud said, "to meet and discuss the need for sound financial judgment in State government, more economy in government spending programs, and the reduction of taxes with the citizens of California in their own communities throughout the State." The motorhomeis, in effect; a combined home and campaignheadquarters on wheels, It has accomodations for five persons, a kitchen, bath and shower. "A vigilant Treasurer, " Busterud stated, "should be the watchdog of the public purse. He is responsible for safely investing millions of dollars in State funds each year. These monies belong to the people of California and should be invested safely on their behalf, " "Taxes are too high,” he stated and added, "I shall continue to fight to eliminate waste and to obtain reduced taxes, Government already takes too much from one's pocketbook at the Federal, State and local levels,” Two GV Men Are Reassigned LACKLAND AFB---Two Grass
