Fireweed or Willow Herb, Epilobium angustifolium, Evening Primrose family. Long spires of rose-purple blossoms are among the first plants to turn scenes of fire devastation of logging operations into gardens of beauty. For this reason, the name Fireweed is applied to this lovely member of the Evening-Primrose family, although it adapts to damp green meadows and stream banks equally as well. The slender wand-like stalks have narrow leaves and stand from two to four feet tall. As these bloom, the buds move upward from a hanging position to a horizontal one folding back first the »reddish sepals, then the gay petals somewhat resembling the four -square position of butterfly wings. The name of epilobium is from Greek words meaning upon the pod, referring to the position of the corolla at the top of the ovary. Particularly showy stands of Fireweed may be seen in the Donner and Tahoe areas as well as in the Sierra Buttes and their surrounding territory, in August and September.
