Page 5. eect tt ROLE LO ALE DOLL: BSH EAI FE HORII EEE HE ee ed 4 et +8 e Oe oH Howard Bigelow Is Honored At Retirement Dinner Howard Thayer "Tom" Bigelow of Yuba City, highway superintendent in charge of special maintenance crews at the Marysville district office, willretire Sept. 1 following nearly 44 years with the California Division of Highways. He was honored at a retirement dinner Aug. 23 at 8 p.m. at the Peach Tree Country Club in Marysville. — Born in Trinity County, Bigelow graduated from Weaverville high school in 1917 and immediately Howard Bigelow accepted employment with the highway division at the Dunsmuir district office (since, moved to Redding). During a two-year period after World War I army service he w orked for the federal government and the DuPont Co. In 1921he re-joined the Dunsmuir staff astimekeeper. Six years later he was promoted to superintendent and assigned the Crescent City territory. He then served successively in this.capacity at Boonville, Sacramento, Woodland, Nevada City and Marysville. ville in 1948 and was assigned supervision of the district's special maintenance services which includes highway striping and marking, tree trimming, highway lighting, traffic signals, radio communications, signs, roadside plantings and equipment distribution. Bigelow is immediate past state president of the Division of Highways Quarter Century Club and is a past president of the Mt. Kanacti Chapter 19 of the California State Employees Association. He is alsoa member of the Elks Club, Masonic Lodge No. 13, Marysville, Scottish Rite and the Marysville Post American Legion. Bigelow's retirement plans include tripsto Northern California and Arizona. Forests Dry-Little Rain The forests have not had any appreciable rain since the first part of June. Timber, brush and grass are extremely dry. During the next two months we can expect critical fire conditions =windy and tinder dry, according to Tahoe National Forest officials, Anyone planning atrip into the forest isurged to comply with all fire laws---obtain acampfire permit before starting the trip. For a safe campfire, clear an area 10 feet in diameter of all burnable material; keep the fire small; do not build a fire on a windy day. Before leaving, make certain the fire is dead out---drown it with water---stir the ashes with a
shovel and repeat until the last spark is out. Carrying a shovel and ax is a good idea on any trip in the mountains, Auburn Sophomore Bill Latone, liberal arts major, will be Sierra College's student body president when classes open Sept. 10. Latone, elected last spring, willbe responsible for the annual “Howdy Day” to welcome some 800 new treshmen to the college during the first week of school. Helping Latone out with the huge task will be Student Body Vice President Dixie Senter of Bill Latone To Head Sierra and council members Slavka Terzich of Roseville, Linda McDonald of Grass Valley, Duane Beggs of Colfax and Chuck Jamison of Roseville. Renee While assigned to division headquarters in Sacramento, Bigelow served as assistant to the state maintenance engineer and was responsible for inspection of all highway maintenance in four of the eleven state highway districts. Bigelow transferred to MarysCampfires must never be left unattended, the foresters warn. Too oftenthey get away and turn a green forest into a pile of ashes.
