Poetry Review ; a
Local poets\combine
to publish book
By DON QUALLS
Two local area poets have just released a book with the dual
title ‘‘Girl on a Mountain”’ by Eileen Curtiss and ‘New Leaves” by
_ Judith Renier.
Eileen and Judy are next-door neighbors in Georgetown, and
this is their first published work. The poetry is contemporary free
verse, and exhibits qualities far above a first attempt. Both poets
show unusual feeling for the earth and natural forces, and while
their works are similar in theme the individuality of each author
comes through strongly to the reader.
Earth-symbols of fire, water, rock and wind are recurring
themes in “‘Girl on a Mountain”. Vivid imagery coupled_with a
primitive and powerful rhythm carries the reader, with siinees
such as the following from the title poem:
“Her sullen stature
Sits as stone —
She knows the words,
But does not speak.’
‘New Leaves’ is characterized by a more subtle rhythm, less
deep in subject matter but taking the reader easily from one mood
to the next. A strong feeling for the temporary nature of life is
evident in Judith’s work, for example:
“The world is rough
On slow starters.
By the time we’ve learned our lines,
The play is done.
By the time we’ve learned
To love a thing,
It’s gone.”’
Dr. William Hotchkiss, of the English department at Sierra
College, says of the book:
‘The works of these two poets fit well together within the same
volume, for indeed they seem to complement each other. .The
poems move outward in unique ways from a central world of poetic
_ belief. And I think the reader will find in this volume an intense and —
moving aesthetic experience.” :
As a reader I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and as a reviewer I
would highly recommend it as unusually good contemporary
poetry. ‘‘Girl on a Mountain” and ‘‘New Leaves”’ is available from
the publisher, Blue Oak Press, 1110 Meadow Oaks Drive, Roseville,
Ca. 95678. (Paperback, $3.00).
