EDITORIAL Billboard Moratorium Makes Sense The move by the Nevada County Planning Commission last week requesting a moratorium on new billboard construction along the county's highways should be applauded throughout the community. The moratorium, it must be understood, would not represent either approval or disapproval of billboards. It would simply provide an opportunity for the commission to study the question of billboards in relation tothe county's overall plans for the future. At the same time, a moratoriumwould leave a decision on billboards up to the people, acting through their elected and appointed representatives. If the county were to continue to allow uncontrolled construction of billboards, sucha decision would be impossible. The billboards would already be there, and there would be little that couldbe done tochange the situation. We happen to believe that few if any people want tosee "billboardslums" along Nevada County's scenic roads. But the proliferation of. billboards along highway 40, as well as on the outskirts of Grass Valley, points to such a future for our roads. The proposed moratorium will give all of us a chance to stop, take stock, and make our opinions known to the planning commission and the supervisors, before this dismal future is a reality. al ath \ ey, IU L I} Karl Anderson, instructor at Nevada Union Junior High, attended the recent Democratic national convention in Los -~ « Angeles. s “ You see here a few of his impressions, Fey as sketched in his notebook. =: Anderson also watched the Republican convention onTV, capturing an additional impression or two of the Republicans in ' action. 1 i, Se ee A ee, a en ee We hope you agree that we are fortunate to be able to print these drawings. —_—_ aennae: 2 csete /] a te \ 2 .
