fn oy, w+ se fy «) #809 '.. Nevada Gounty Nugget... August 3, 1966 NEVADA COUNTY NUGGET EDITORIAL HOPES FOR THE COUNTY CHAMBER The county at long last has disbanded the board of trade and created a county chamber of commerce. We hope the new organization does not fall into some of the pitfalls of the board of trade. To be effective, and that means to get full value out of the taxpayer's dollar, the cham=ber will have to be truly a promotional organization. To do this, the good things the county has tooffer, from clean air to industrial sites, will have to be actively and cleverly promoted all year long. < There is only one way to do this and that is tohave it done by a professional. Alot of peo= ple put a lot of hours into the board of trade, but in. the end the efforts centered around the job of sending out brochures, answering a few questions and doling out money in dribs and drabs to a variety of events by other chambers of commerce and organizations. We hope this does not happen with the new organization orthechange will be in name only. The new county chamber will have to be adequately staffed by competent people to do its job properly. A county chamber that really promotes the many benefits of visiting or living in Nevada County could be an enormous value to those living here now and footing the bills. Anything less is a waste of time and money. POST OFFICE PROJECT 15S;MOVING The Nevada City Council moved another step. closer to preserving the historic Ott's Assay Office and to bringing a new post office to the city last week, then it approved a resolution to purchase excess property around the building from the State of California. We think this is a wise move. There has been a lot of grumbling in some quarters about the lack of action on the part of both the city and the Nevada Company in getting the project moving. But a project that includes negotiations between the city, the state, the federal government and a private corporation is a complex one and we feel the city is wise to move slowly and cover all of the angles. The project is moving, even if the movement is slight and at times almost imperceptable. A great many people have put a lot of time in on this dual purpose project. Most of the grumblers have contributed only criticism to the project. We think the city can only stand to gain by going in with the Nevada Company proposal to turn the Assay Office into a postal facility. Now that the whole plan seems feasible, we hope all parties will continue to move the project toward a successful conclusion. The Old Nevada County Courthouse. IN THE FOOTHILLS VEIN THE SAD, SILENT NEVADA THEATER T here it stands, solid, silent, the site of important history for Nevada City and the state of California. Underneath all the dirty stucco is a good example of early Califomia gold town theater architecture, Edwin Booth, Mark Twain and Emma Nevada, to name a few, trod those boards, The century old Nevada Theater should be preserved. “Yeah, yeah, hurrah, hear, hear! Let's do it! It's important to history and its important to the city and the county. We could get the University of California in on it and could have semiprofessional as well as local productions, Let's do it,” There is great excitement, Matrons swell with pride and excitement over the prospect of making Nevada City the cultural eenter of Northern Califomia. Would-be actors » actresses and directors quiver with the anticipation of actually having a theater in which they could put all of their aspirations on stage. Mer-chants start mentally calculating the take that would be added to the local tills by the visitors live theater would bring to the town, Then someone, there's one in every crowd, asks who would like to be the first contributor to this exciting new venture, Someone else asks for volunteers to conduct a door to door fund raising can* SS) vas, WN ies —— tron, "I don‘t know where I'd find the time." "I'd be happy to help on the production end," ways one of the would be actors, “but I just couldn't go to someone and ask for money,” “It would be great," says one of the merchants, “but my business has to come first, Things are tough in this town--you know, the freeway and lack of parking and things, I don't know how I could find the time or the money," . So, there it stands, solid, silent and likely to remain so, The Nevada Theater -worthy of preservation, but seemingly an unattainable goal, And w hat about the benefits of small theater for Nevada City?
Are there other alternatives for the money already collected by a few people who did not leave when the rest of the crowd melted away? No one seems to be willing to admit that the Nevada Theater drive is stalled on dead center and will probably never move off that spot unless some angel comes along and dumps an enormous amount of money into the campaign, The possibility of an angel appearing is about as likely as a repeat performance by Edwin Booth, ye It’s all rather sad, because theater in Nevada City could be of tremendous benefit to all the citizens, eeeese OUR NOMINATION for the most uninterestin i § news item of the past week, or the past several weeks for that matter, is the shape material and design of Luci Johnson's wedding dress, " e+ Don Hoagland ~ NUGGET PARAGRAPHS © FROM THE PAST CAMPTONVILLE--In a recent issue of the Nugget, it was stated that Fred W. Hannson of this place, held the record for a new rat and mice bait, he having discovered that local honey was the stuff. His prowess has been shattered however by a neighbor Mrs, M. G. Calvin, who has found something that puts honey far into the background, The other night, Mrs. Colvin was greatly disturbed by a roll.ing noise taking place in the upstairs ofherhome. Upon examination in the day following she discovered that some rodents were having a football game with a candy Easter egg, She tied the egg to a string near the trap, and has already caused six of the rats to meet their death in an endeavor to get away with the egg. . This also is a new one, and deserves trial if one is bothered with rats but be sure to use the right kind of Easter egg, and Mrs, Colvin is the only one who holds this secret, Clara Edwards, well known composer of New York City, was weekend guest of Mr, and Mrs, Leo Weintraub at the National Hotel, Mrs, Edward's best known compositions include “The Wind and the Rain in Your ' Hair," “TheBend of the River", and “Into the Night, " eee March 17, 1950 eeese R. J. Bennetts, ever mindful of the best interests of Nevada City told the city board last night that he would be willing to donate without charge a sufficient sized plot to install the new swimming tank in his projected park on the old foun site, if they wished to locate it there and save several thousand dollars in buying a site, A specialcom mittee consisting of A. M. Holmes, E, J. N. Ott and city engineer Uren were appointed to look into sites and report in two weeks at the regular meeting. Mr, Bennetts will be on the committee in a minor capacity. o.Feb, 7,.1927 NEVADA COUNTY NUGGET Published Every Wednesday Bv NUGGET PUBLISHING CO. INC, 318 Broad Street, Nevada City, Calif. George R.
