Only 92 GRASS VALLEY---Mrg Carrie] V. Heilman, Pine Lane, Grass Valley, won't be 93 until her birthday six months from now, ~— = *. Friday she took her annual tide on the Nevada County Fair ferris wheel, as spry as the youngest maiden at the Fair, Mrs, Heilman each year looks forward to the Nevada County Fair with the eagerness of the young, for it brings with it her annual ferris wheel ride, But the lady is no stranger to adventure. In 1874, at the age of five, she left Mexico, Missouri, to journey west by wagon train to Monte Vista, Colo. Her train was led by a skilled wagon master through Indian territory, but had one encounter with danger. Thirteen of the wagons in the train, however, turned back because of the warnings along the route, ;At one point the train left” the trail for a distance of 35 miles to avoid the massacring and pillaging that was waiting on the trail ahead. Mrs. Heilman came to California in 1949 and has lived in Grass Valley since that time. She has no shortage of friends, but one that she sees but once a year is the ferris wheel at the fair, She'll be there againin '62, she vows. Sierra JC Bus Times ROCKLIN ---Fall bus schedules for Sierra College students were announced today by Miss Kathro Frank, dean of student personnel at the new Rocklin campus. Five different bus routes are scheduled to deliver district students to the college daily at 7:50 a.m. Departure from the campus is scheduled for 4:50 p.m, daily, Miss Frank announced. Special bus service will be provided for all new students on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 7 and 8 for the annual “Introduction to College" program. On those days, pickup at all bus stops will be made exactly 30 minutes later than the usual schedule, with students arriving on campus at 8:20 a.m. The scheduling includes: AUBURN Bus 5 leaves the parking lot at Highway 49 and Lincoln Way daily at 7:25. a.m. COLFAX Bus 4 leaves Mel's Chevron station at 7; and Weimar Overcrossing at 7:05, Students between Colfax and Grass Valley should take a bus at either Colfax or Grass Valley, whichever is closer, Miss Frank advised. GRASS VALLEY Bus 3 leaves Steele Supply at 6:50; Cherry Creek cafe at 7:05; WolfRoad at 7315; Yamasaki nursery at 7:25, NEVADA CITY Bus 5 leaves National hotel at 6:40; Miner's Hospital at 6:47; Yuba River Lumber at 6:50. SNIP...Maid of Nevada County Linda McCombs (right) officially opens the 1961 Nevada County Forest Fair as Princesses Clarita Richards of Donner Lake smiles her approval. Sunday near midnight on the 1961 Nevada County Fair, and the event was judged a success by all concerned. Attendance jumped this yearnearly 2,500 toa record 36,390, Last year 33,949 attended the fair. Even more would have swelled the total, Officials believe, if weather sunday morning had not been
damp and cool. In addition, there were more exhibits this year than ever before, and more entries in fair competition. Guessing contests showed the following winners: Fat calf, weight, 541 pounds, 6 ounces, guess 540 pounds, 12 ounces, won by Ann Behen of Smartville. Sow and baby pigs, weight guessed correctly at 353 pounds, 12 ounces by Bert Darling of Grass Valley. The gold weighed 22.65 ounces, with Sam Umberger and Andrew Baker, both of Grass Valley, guessing 22.08 ounces. First through fourth grades ; will attend the Nevada City Y School on Main Street from School Opens Tuesday NEVADA CIT Y---It will be “back to school" Tuesday for more than 4,000 Nevada County elementary and high school students. N evada C ounty S uperintendent of Schools, Ed Fellerson said he expects an increase in the number of students, with possible crowded conditions in Kentucky Flat and North San Juan, Pleasant Ridge School expects an increase of 20 children, hesaid. There are 13 elementary school districts in the county, one high school district. Nevada City fifth through eighth graders will report to Seven Hills School, previous ly used by the high school district as a junior high, School hours for them will be from 9 a,m. to 3:30 p.m. Junior high school students move to the old high school plant in Grass Valley, and high school students become the first classes at the new Ridge Road school plant, Bus schedules are not yet ready for release, according to the district.
