Road Work Needed i By A Dam Site

The Jackson Meadow Dam offers unusual
opportunity for the future development of
our county's "high country".
In discussing Jackson Meadow, Manager Ed Koster of NID recently mentioned
that it is likely that construction equipment will use the Truckee access to thearea because the road is in much better
is hape than those from Bear Valley or
‘Graniteville.
While we do not favor competition between the two sections of our county, it
does seem a shame that a western county
development will likely be of the most
benefit to our eastern neighbors.
Perhaps this is the time for the county
supervisors to investigate the possibility
of bringing one of the two western access
roads upto the standards that wouldallow
its use by contractors. The benefits would
be more lasting than just during the dambuilding stages.
The Bear Valley road connecting Highway
20 with Bowman Lake is one such access.
Enroute to Bowman it passes Fuller Lake
and Rucker Lake. Improvement of this road
to Bowman Lake and thence to Jackson Meadow would offer great improvement torecreational use of Fuller, Rucker, Bowman and
Jackson Meadow Lakes, as well as making
more accessible nearly a dozen other small
lakes east of the road.
The Graniteville road to Bowman and thence
to Jackson Meadow isa shorter stretch and
might be easier to improve. It would also
give much improved access to Bowman Lake
and Jackson Lake. It would give a new
connection over the Sierra, Graniteville to
Truckee via Jackson Lake.
The Graniteville road would also tie intothe proposed Malakoff-North Bloomfield
State Park area. It would have the greatest
impact on western county growth, since
.
all traffic over the road would travel

portion of our county.
This is the time our supervisors should
of these access roads. Perhaps federal
or state road construction aid is available
for this task. Perhaps one of these roads
would qualify for aid under the national
forest access road program.
The Jackson Meadow Dam offers opportunity to the county for economic growth.
That growth will:be measured in proportion
to accessibility.
