THE CONWAY REPORT --John Conway has returned from Europe in time to read the final letter in his written report to friends at home..... “Italy was arid and very dry. My cousin, Eckerhardt, 16, and I traveled on a Touropa Tour. The price of the tour including train fare, all meals, and hotel accommodations with twin beds cost $85 each. “We left Offenberg and went to Bruckstahl where we caught the train for Verona and Florenz. I was amazed to learn that in the middle of the night I was to sleep in the same compartment with a woman, but I made the most of an embarrassing situation. “There were my cousin, a young student from the university, her husband and I---all in the same compartment where we were to sleep fully clothed on tripletiered sleeping benches---with no curtains to separate the blondes from the stags. Well! That's all I can say. "But after a few nights of this, I threw modesty to the four winds and undressed along with all the rest of them ---there we all were, one Eve with three Adams, and no fig leaves! Well! "(But, here the sense of values is different---nature and temperament come first---all else is secondary.) “We traveled over to Innsbruck, over the beautiful -Brenner Pass, to Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet. There Isaw her grave and the chapel. From Verona we went to charming Florenz with its delightful churches, its chapel of Medici and the wonderful statues of Michealangelo---a wonderful, wonderful man. ; "From Florenz, we traveled to Rome---and again the beautiful fountains of Michaelangelo---the indescribable S Spraying and Landscaping Garden insect Control.. APPLIANCES _ Phone 273-4197 BY DEAN THOMPSON Vatican and museum with the work of Michaelangelo and Rapoael,...'. 5 "But there were thousands and thousands of people touring. “We sat out in an old Roman bath.and saw the opera ‘Turandot’ by Puccini onone of the largest stages in the world---with over 5,000 people on thestage at once! It was a gorgeous spectacle with beautiful and outstanding color combinations. I have never seen anything so beautiful! “Then to walk in Rome at night with all of the fountain s andruins lighted! I spent over $50 buying slides of Michealangelo’s and Raphael's work. The statue of Moses by Michealangelo is wonderful. It seems actually real. "Then on to Naples and to Capri---wherel went by boat all around theisland. Then to Venice, acity I really love, with its many canals and gondolas and people singing in the boats. "But it is so warm it Italy, and in the south so arid. Capri has no water on it. The island is all volcanic and water must be shipped from the mainland by boat. It never rains on Capri. : “Michaelangelo has made Italy---otherwise the filth , the squalor and the heat would make it indescribable. itis beastly inthe summer. The people do not bathe nor do they use deodorants, And one drinks only wine and more wine. But, the wine is very good. "On the tour with us was a 19-year-old student who had escaped from East Germany where his father is a high government official in the Communist State..On our last night in Italy he wasso sad because hehad to go back to East Germany, otherwise his family would suffer. He Was SO very Sad...4. "Also on the train with us was our train guide, a young man of 22, who was once a White Russian, but whose family had escaped. He took me many places where I could see how the people actually lived and worked. The poverty of the lower Italian Classes is indescribable, and the upper classes wear furs, diamonds and real pearis. A land of contrasts..The Adriatic Sea of differences. "So there we were---the four of us: the German, the Communist, the WhiteRussian, and the Calvinistic Capitalist---all held together by the depth and understanding of Michaelangelo, the beauty and music of Puccini, the charm of the peaceful fountains. . and held together by the spirit of Christ, His cross, and the many churches with all their beauty..and, aswe sat on our last night on the train drinking together, all four of us, a cheap bottle of red wine, I thought of my friend, Michaelangelo, and of his statue of Moses whose penetrating eyes look
with amazement and a deep hurt--eyes that seem to say, “You do not understand, I have come to say ‘Love Thy ow Neighbor". BUY UNIT LOTS & SAVE++* D.E. The new building went up in ‘54 on Broad Street and still serves tourist and drummer alike; drummer was a traveling salesman in those days. This isa very rare photograph of the hotel's bar in the 1880's when Bayliss S, Rector woned the National. You could get almost any service your heart desired within the confines of the hotel in those days, and you could slake your thirst, whether constant or just temporary, at the elegant bar. And it was here the White Layd lived on a pedestal, shenever left the barroom until things of the past went out of fashion for the moment. So she went. Where, I surely would like to know. And the man in the white jacket was barber William Walters who lived on Coyote remember? The gentleman with the beard was Bayliss himself; the bar keeper was Bachigalupi, a handle-mustached, genial Italian. The Lady In White Can anyone tell me what happened tothe Lady in White? Did some antique. dealer pick her up for a song with so many other momentos of Nevada City's gold rush era? Letters To (Copy of a letter sent to the Hwy. Patrol, Grass Valley.) Dear Sirs: Once more the intersection of Highway 20 and Nevada Street has been the scene of a crash--this one the worst yet-the little man from Montana is dead, Since a death seemed to bethe requirement, and you have now had one, could you see toit to install the warning blinkers so necessary to make the intersection safe, or must new legislation be enacted to empower the ruling body to spend the needed funds to protect the three little kindergarteners who will be leaving the school bus at that exact corner when school starts in a few days? Or must their safety be a "catch as catch can” business because that intersection has not yet been proven dangerous enough to give any feeling of responsibility for the safety of pedestrians? The young woman who lives inside the fence across the road actually keeps a clean blanket where she can instantly snatch it to cover victims against shock, and she hasreported so many accidents to the Sheriff's Office The Editor , that they know her voi¢e and need never ask “where”, Weare asking in all sincerity, how much does it take in pain, grief, heartache, regret, money spent for hospitalization and now for burial costs before the influential peopleto come to a realizing sense and change any legislation that allows such stupidities to exist in the name and to the shame of the word “law"? Sincerely yours, Margaret Hamblin Nevada City Dear Editors: I almost have to put your paper under lock and key-until I can read it first. Our editor, Mr, Brooks, spent his vacation up in your part of the country--he said he had only one regret about his vacation and that was be-. cause he couldn't turn around and go right back to stay! Do youknow where! could send to get colored postcards of The Skunk? I would sure like to see what it looks like?
