Linda Smith Wears Silk and Lace
for Wedding to Patrick Carr
Linda Ann Smith and Patrick E. Carr exchanged
wedding vows and rings July 15 in St. Canice
Catholic Church with the Rev. William Daly officiating.Vases of white stock, gladiolas and baby breath
decorated the church for the early afternoon wedding. Mrs. Fred Porter played organ music and
Robert Peterson was the soloist.
The bride’s father, Allan A. Smith, gave her in
marriage. The Smiths are residents of Nimrod St.,
Nevada City, and the groom’s parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Robert E. Carr, live on Calvary in Nevada City.
Linda’s floor length-silk gown had a lace yoke
and tapered sleeves of lace. She wore a sleeveless
silk overcoat over the wedding town and her cathedral length train of lace was attached at the back
shoulder line. A lace rose with three silk petals
secured the shoulder length veil.
A long time friend of the Smith family, Mrs.
Barney Matthews of Monterey, designed and made
the wedding gown from material purchased by the
bride’s father in Taipei.
The lovely bridal bouquet was of cascading white
roses surrounded by stephanotis.
Kristine was her sister’s maid of honor and
bridesmaids were Nan Carr,’ the groom’s sister,
,and Jacque Frost. Colleen Smith and Ursula Smith
and Mike Carr, the groom’s brother, Tom bottman
and Richard Bunning were the ushers. Arthur
Smith was the ring bearer.
Vases of yellow and white flowers and a ring of
yellow and white flowers surrounded the three tiered
wedding cake for the reception which followed the
wedding ceremony. Over 200 guests attended the
reception held in the Nevada City Veterans Memorial Hall. Donna Baker was in charge of the
guest book, cake and punch were served by Erna
Mildred, Patty Baker, Dixie Roberts and Charla
Adams. After the reception a buffet was held for
relatives and out-of-town guests.
Mr. and Mrs. Pat Carr traveled down the Paci‘ fic coast to Santa Ana for their wedding trip. The
new Mrs. Carr wore an orange-two piece suit and
white accessories for the trip.
Linda and Pat are graduates of Nevada Union
School. Pat is stationed at the Marine Corps
Air Station in El Toro. ea
For something old Linda carried her mother's
100 year old lace handkerchief; for something new,
pearl earrings; something borrowed, a pair of
rosary beads the bride’s mother carried at her
wedding exactly 24 years before and the sothething
blue, a garter. Linda placed a sixpence in her shoe
for good luck.

I have practiacally lived at the country store (Rough
and Ready Fire Dept. Auxiliary and Chamber of Commerce concession at the Fair) for two weeks. There is
a lot of news floating around in my brain but its spinning
so fast very little filters out. Rough and Ready had a
big time at the Fair.
Our STAR was the Rough and Ready Grange. For their
entire lifetime (11 years) the Grange has tried to bring
home a Blue: Ribbon for its feature booth. They have all
the other colors and this time they won the “Blue”. “Retirement the Golden Years in Nevada County” was the
theme. Charles Deardorf, booth chairman, is justifiably
proud. Gunnar Williams constructed the booth and the art
work and arranging was all done by Jim and Lida Lawson.
It was a thing of beauty and interest. I saw one viewer
listing the various retirement activities exemplified. For
future reference, I expect. It takes-a lot of people to put a
booth like that together and the Grange should be commended for this splendid example of community cooperation.

The Grange Ladies had a spot in the garden display
section, “Grandmas’ Dooryard,” which was very lovely.
Marguerite Abbott was the chairman. The basket of vegetables on the doorstep and the old lamp, eyeglasses, and
Bible on the table inside the window really made the little
scene come to life. It reminded me of my grandmother and
that made it a Blue Ribbon winner in my eyes even if it
did only take third place. This display doesn’t appear magacially either. Its lots of hard work. I speak from experience.

Our 4-Hers’ had scads of entries and did very well
with them. Faye Burkhard, 4-H Club Leader and her
husband Everette spent all their time at the Fair, too.
Besides helping the 4-Hers they gave our Country Store
a big hand.

Our Fire Dept. was fortunate and got a last minute
cancellation on a good concession. They had the soft drinks
and pie and cake. The call went out through Marie Broadus,
auxiliary chairman telephoning system and the communitybaked pfés and cakes for them, and Rosettes for the. the
country store, like mad right through that HOT weather.
I repeat “cooperation is a wonderful’ thing.”

Our 4-H Junior Leaders have just returned from leadership conference at Davis. Debbie Peterson assued me that
she, Debbie Bursill and Dave Siegfried learned a lot as
well as having a wonderful time.
Young Bruce Harwood finally got a bit of a summer
vacation and is. all set now for school. With his family,
Mr. and Mrs. Marion Harwood, Bruce explored the Golden
Gate Park and then they spent a day in Castro Valley with
his grandparents. Bruce, and his older brother Terry,
made one of those very nice signs on our country store.
Debbie Moiniz made one for us, also. Debbie says she
really enjoys that kind of work. Faye Burkhard contributed the big country store sign. I repeat “EVERYONE .
cooperated.” There are so many workers in these projects that you never see. They work at home or somewhere behind the scenes running errands. I wish I could
name them all so everyone could say Thanks!
