Foote-LeightHamm Nugget Drama Editor In all our years of following the theatrical trail up and down the Mother Lode, we have never before witnessed anything like the production of Golden Days Friday and Saturday which marked the centennial of the old Nevada City Opera House, The shortest possible tribute to a great dramatic and musical production could be: There was a paucity of miscues but a plethora of skilled performance, In our younger and more cynical years we might unjustly have said “this isthe type of show. that will be enjoyed by people who enjoy
this kind of a show," But perhaps we have mellowed with the passing years, Perhaps the greatest tribute to the production was made by Dr, Glen Burch, head of the extension service of the University of California at Davis, Dr, Burch said: “Ihave never seen such response and enthusiasm generated in a community and I have never seen or heard so much talent on a community stage, " Wecan only hopethat Dr. Burch passes this line to the Davis dramatic department to the end that Nevada City may have summer theatre soon, The show seemed to have been adequately written and masterfully directed, Being a Marian Libbey production, it could be no less We doff our high silk hat to vocalists of the show---Dawn Trubeschenck and Bob Petersen in a delightful duet, Julia Dalluge in the part of Kate Hayes singing Una Voci, Poco Fa from the barber of Seville, Ardis Bell, a skilled trouper who played the role of Emma Nevada and sang "Vissi d'Arte” from Tosca and "The Last Rose of Summer;" The lilting, skipping role of Lotta Crabtree, portrayed by Jacquiline Trueblood; Ed Haven of the Miners Chorus who sang Silver Threads Among the Gold, a nostalgic (Continued on Page 21) Five Cent OMS Increase Is Needed To Pay For County Budget Nevada County Supervisors Monday wrapped up the 1965-66 budget and chose a finance plan which will call for a five cent tax increase to carry the $5,212, 608 budget. County Auditor-Controller Tom Trauner presented the supervisors with three schedules of financing for the budget. All called for tax increases and the board chose the schedule with the smallest tax hike, The final financing formula was worked out: by removing reserve requirements for the general fund, road fund, exploitation and aviation funds, by directing $50, 000 of state monies from the road fund into the general fund and reducing the unappropriated reserve from $150,000 to $50,000, The program includes a.total expenditure appropriation of $4,977,538 and reserves of $40, 070.59 for a total budget of $5,017, 608.59, Available tinancing from sources other than local property taxes is $3,601, 440.06 leaving $1,416,168.53 to be raised by taxes, Based on a tax rate of $2.56 cents per $100 of assessed valuation, this would bring in $74,018.38 from the unsecured taxroll and $1,342, 150.15 from the secured roll, The supervisors also considered several departmental requests for changes in the budget. The biggest of these was an across the board cost of living pay increase of $15 per month for all county employees except those prohibited by law. Lee Johns, representing the County Employees Association, appeared during the morning session and asked the board togiveconsideration to the request of the Association and the letter from the personnel commission recommending employee pay (Continued on Page 2) WUOK KESUMED yesterday along the route of the Nevada City segment of the Grass Valley-Nevada City freeway after members of the Pile Drivers Union voted Tuesday night to end the strike which had closed down the job for more than two weeks.
