In other words, she would be in line for the loan to which the deceased veteran had established his unused right, if she has not remarried, Cal-Vet loans are made of up to $15,000 for a home and $40,000 for a farm. The widow and the desired property would have to qualify along the same lines as for a veteran’s loan, on the basis of income, debts, suitability of the property, and so forth. In the case of federal GI loans, veterans’ unremarried widows of this or any state may be eligible if the death of the veteran resulted from a service-connected disability, or if the deceased died during service. Such widows are eligible for either direct loans, from the Veterans Administration, or a loan guaranteed by the Veterans AdVA And Assn. Of. Retired Persons Join The Veterans Administration and the American Association of Retired Persons have joined forees in a nationwide program for “senior citizens,” the heads of the agency and association announced in Washington, D.C. Sumned G. Whittier, adminitrator of veterans affairs and a member of President Eisenhower’s Federal Council on Aging, said the VA hopes to enlist as volunteers at its 170 hospital across the United. States thout [ sands of retired men and women with ability’ in companionship services and arts, crafts and hobbies of nearly all kinds. Dr. Ethel Perey Andrus, 75year-old president and founder of the AARP, has pledged the active support of her group’s 55,000 members. She announced that the AARP will spearhead a nationwide drive fbeoneh its membership. —_ “We are seeking to Gdiineteide to our senior citizens that volunteer work in a VA hospital is a meaningful, productive alternative to rocking chair retirement,” Mr. Whittier said. Volunteers are urgently neéeded to help veteran patients make the transition from. hospital to community, and the program offers older citizens opportunity to find new friends, develop their skills and interests, and be of worthwhile service to many of the disabled of their own generation, he said. Of the 110,000 veterans in VA hospitals on the average day, about half are 55 years or older. The hospital volunteer. activities cover a wide range—from simply visiting with hospitalize and shut-in veterans to helping in medical clinics, chapel services, and therapeutic groups for psychiatric and other patients. Included are painting, sculpture, music, dramatics, creative], : : : ance is drawing extra pensioniy writing, journalism, — teaching, ham and hospital radio station operation, book reviews, photography, current events discussions, stamp collecting, gardening, and crafts such as weaving and leather tooling. Interested persons may secure information on joining the program from the chief of special service at any VA _ hospital, or may write to American Associa‘tion of Retired Persons, Colonial Building, Washmgton, D. C. Widows of. World. War I veterans must make application for federal GI loans before July 25, 1960, and widows of Conflict veterans have until January 31, 1965. There is no time limit on applications for Gal-Vet loans, either ofr widows or veterans. VA Extending Its Foster. Home Plan e Te Veterans Administration is extending its: nationwide “foster home” program ‘to include physically disabled veterans, the agency said last week. Established in 1951 to provide a normal home life for recovering mental patients as a step in their return from the hospital to} the community, the program has enabled thousands of VA mental patients to live with “adopted” families in private homes. The veterans pay for their room, board and care frorh their own funds. The program for general medical and surgical patients will make use of boarding and nursing homes, as-well as private residences. It will give physically disabler and aged veteran-patients help of VA social workers in finding a suitable place to live when they . have rio relatives who can pro= vide a suitable home. . VVA said volunteers from the community ate proving of invaluable aid in locating foster homes and in helping the disabled veterans adjust to —s life in. Questions-Answers Q. I understand the GI interest rate has been raised by law to 5% per cent. Am I correct in thinking the higher rate applies only to new loans, and does not affect loans made before the new ‘law? A. That is correct. Loans closed before July 2, 1959, are in no way affected by the new: law. Only loans made on or after this date can be charged the new 5% per cent interest. Q. My 3 year + from discharge deadline for starting school under the Korean GI Bill will come in August. Can I make application then, and start classes when school opens in September? A. No. You must actually be in school by your deadline. You. may not make application before the deadline, with the idea of starting ‘after it has passed. Q. To claim an inereased allowance, you should send VA a certified copy of either the public record or the church reco: of your marriage. It must bear the seal and signature of whoever keeps the records in the church or court. Q.
