NEVADA TERRITORY -We
notice that Senator Gwin has introduced a bill into the Senate to
organize the “Territory of Nevada." While we believe the interests of the people of Western
Utah require a separate Territorial
government, we trust that the bill
introduced by Senator Gwin will
be defeated, unless the proposed
name for the-new Territory is
changed. Nevada County, in
population and wealth, is one of
the most important in California,
and adjoining as it does Western
Utah, it is much to be regretted
that the residents of the latter
country should so persistently insist upon affixing the same name
to their proposed Territory. The
inconvenience and trouble that
must necessarily result from this
confusion ofnames are so readily
foreseen, it is surprising that the
people of Western Utah have not,
for their own sake, adopted a
name more appropriate. Should
the name be finally adopted, it
will be found that thousands of
letters, designed for Nevada
Territory, will annually be first
sent into Nevada county, after
which, by a roundabout way,
they may find their proper destination; and the residents of this
county will be subject to the like
inconvenience of having their
letters “missent” into Nevada
Territory. The people of Nevada
county should take some action
in this matter, and endeavor if
possible to defeat the project of
applying the name of their county
to the Territory adjoining. A
petition on the subject, stating
the bare fact that Nevada county,
in California, is located upon the
borders of Western Utah, would
have much influence upon mem~
bers of Congress, and we believe
would have the effect either to
defeat the bill, or else compel
those who have it in charge to
substitute some more appropriate
name.

NEVADA TERRITORY -INDIAN
NAME---In our issue of two weeks
ago, we alludedto the inconvenience that would result to the
people of this county by the application of the name "Nevada"
tothe Territory east of the mountains, now known as the Washoe
country. We are gratified to
notice that the Legislature has
taken action on this subject. On
Friday last, Mr. Smith, of Nevada, introduced into the Assembly the following resolutions,
which were adopted:
Whereas, Since the year 1850,
one of the most populous counties,
and one of the largest inland
cities in the State, have borne
the name of "Nevada"; and
As insects are blind to the color

whereas, the application of the
name to another Territory or State
would-occasion mistakes and
delays in postal and other communications, and would thus
subject the inhabitants of the '
Pacific Coast to serious inconveniences and loss; therefore be it
is, thatthe Washoes are a treacherous, thieving tribe, and are
disliked by the white residents;
but the same objection might be
made against the adoption of any
Indian name, for treachery, and
a disposition to appropriate to
their own use the property of the
whites, are among the characteristics of all the North American
Indian tribes. The tribes that furnished names for Massachusetts,
Alabama, Illinois, lowa, and
some dozen other States, were
ame
no better than the poor Washoes,
and yet there is not an intelligent
citizen of any of those States who
does not rejoice that the names
given to the localities by the indigenous races have been perpet~
uated by their white successors.
Resolved, by the Assembly, the
Senateconcurring, That, in case
of the organization of a Territorial
government in Western Utah, our
Senators in Congress are instructed, and our Representatives
requested, to use their exertions
thatsuch Territory do not receive
the name of “Nevada”.
Resolved, That his Excellency
the Governor he requested to
communicate this resolution to
our delegation in Congress.
We presume there will be no
opposition to the resolutions in
the Senate, and it is desirable
that they should be adopted immediately and forwarded to our
members of Congress. The late
news. from Washington renders it
highly probable that an act will
be passed providing a Territorial
government for the Washoe country, and should our Congressmen
receive Mr. Smith's resolutions
before the final passage of the
bill, they will have no difficulty
in getting the name changed.
It is somewhat surprising that
that the people of Western Utah
should think of going outside of
their own borders to find a name
for their Territory and future
State, when there are so many
beautiful Indian names that are
locally applicable. “Washoe” is
the name of a large tribe of Indians and of a lake and valley in
the proposed new Territory, and
by common consent this term is
now used to designate the argeutiferous re gion lying along the
eastern base of the Sierra Nevadas. The name is euphonious,
and no good reason can be given
why it should not be applied to the
new Territory. The only objection
we have ever heard to the name,
