a ce eee nea Sores é eh (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1) ‘(based on the value of. gold at that time) in the Malakoff holdings, Lindgren . estimated that 30,000,000 cubic yards of tertiary gravel had been excavated in the North Bloomfield area and that 130,000,000 yards still remain. Lindgren estimates the “same amount of gravel is available in the Lake City area. Lindgren states Blue Tent is comparable to Grizzly: Hill across the canyon of the South Yuba, ‘but of the 90,000,000 yards remaining of the original 105,000,000, much is barren clay and sand, Lindgren explains the tertiary deposits are the result of volcanic eruptions of rhyolite and andesite damming the flow of the Yuba which in early tertiary ages flowed from You Bet to North Columbia. In this great longitudinal valley masses of gravel several hundred feet in depth had accumulated. The Yuba River blowing in the middle slopes in a broad and open valley had to turn and force its way through the foothill range of jurassic lavas in a relatively deep and narrow canyon, This foothill range acted as a barrier, restraining the gravel masses. in the open valleys of the middle slopes, — In a brief geological history of this area Lindgren goes back to the paleozic era when sea covered all the Sierras, In the mesozoic era sediments were compressed in heavy folds and the. intrusion of granitic magmas forced them into lofty summits, The fissures and joints of granitic rocks and altered sediments became filled with veins and ‘seams. of gold-bearing quartz, Erosion during the cretaceous era planed the newborn mountains, and the concentration of gold began in countless streams. Renewed uplift of the mountains facilitated further concentration of the gold, and the process. continued through tertiary time. Toward the end of the tertiary period volcanic action filled the valleys with rhyolite flows, covered the auriferous gravels and outlined new stream courses as mentioned earlier in the alteration of the flow of the Yuba River. Renewed disturbances tilted the mountains to accentuate the normal faulting, The streams, as a result, dropped rapidly and wore deep canyons across the old tertiary channels, Eruption of andesite effectively buried the tertiary streams andfilled their valleys to the rims, At the close of the tertiary period the Sierras were a steaming de‘ solate expanse of volcanic mud. The filled valleys confined ‘the streams into their newer channels’ of torrential grades that all through the pliocene and quartenary eras cut the amazingcanyons that we see today. In many -places the old river channels of the tertiary period were exposed and now can often be seen high on the canyon walls, The hordes of men who were stricken with lust for gold poured into the Sierras and attacked first the auriferous gravels of the present streams, but gradually traced the metal to the old tertiary river beds and to the quartz veins, the primary source of all gold in this area. The channels proved difficult to mine until the development of hydraulicking to wash down the gravel banks and by drift mining to get at the old stream. -_ beds beneath the heavy volcanic covering.
