Senators and Representatives, Congressman Johnson
participated in the meeting
along with Senator Clair
Engle and Congressman
Clem Miller, Representative
Johnson said that the President had approved a program which included both
immediate and long-range
action designed to increase
employment, improve efficiency and raise earnings.
Thenew steps which were
approved by the President at
the Congressional conference called for:
1. The initiation of neggotiations with Canada looking toward ‘early dchievement of a voluntary agreement with Canada to limit
the amounts of softwood lumber that could be imported
into the United States.
2. Thesubmission of a request tothe Congress for additional funds for the Forest
Development and Road Trail
Programs to assure .the
prompt harvest of National
Forest timber,
3. The amendment. of. the
Intercoastal Shipping laws to
permit use of foreign vessels
when those conditions exist
which indicate severe hardship to American shippers.
This amendment will reduce
the handicaps suffered by
American producers in the
intercoastal shipment of
lumber.
4, Animmediate increase
in allowable cuts which will
make available 150 million
board feet onthe lands managed by the Department of
the Interior.
5. Theestablishment of a
preferance for A merican products in the purchase of lumber by the Department of Defense, the General Services
Administration and other
Federal depart mentsand
agencies, This could be particularly significant in connection with the various aspects of the AID Program.
6. Increased attention to
loan applications filed with
theSmall Business Administration and the Area Redevelopment Administration by
lumber mills in order to enable them to upgrade their
production and better compete with imported lumber
products. ;
"In addition, " Representative Johnson said, “President
Kennedy indicated that he
was directingthat there be a
continuing review of the problems of the industry by an
inter-agency committee in
orderthat developments and
problems might be anticipated and recommendations
madeto meet and overcome
any difficulties or handicaps

SIERRA VILLE---On Sunday,
July 29 near Cottonwood
Creek on the Sierraville district of the Tahoe National
Forest Mr. P. C. Smith of
Ross, California-was issued
a citation for an unattended
campfiré. Mr, Smith was
taken before Justice of the
Peace Alden Johnson of Sierraville and fined $105.00.
The number of man-caused
fires_on the Tahoe National
Forest is well below average
so farthis year. However,
the most severe fire weather
of the season can be expected
to occur during the next two
months, The cooperation of
all national forest users is
urgently needed during this
critical period to stop mancaused fires at the source.

Letters To The Editor
Dear Sir:
Thanks to Commander
Weeks(Nugget, Letters, July
25) for putting a different
focus on the flag incidents.
The editorial p.s, might also
have noted that. prudence
(and the same Flag Code)
would indicate the use of
bunting as an appropriate
substitute for decorative
purposes, thus eliminating
the need for judicial choice
between vandalism and des>
ecration.
But can someone explain
the flag which was lugged
along Broad St. as a money
collecting device?
One more thought: we're
now taught nationalism (to
be mistrusted) and oneworldism(to be sought), Just
a matter of semantics, perhaps, but should we explore
the basics of patriotism,
which is quite another matter entirely, and hardly at
all subversive?
We're so glad to see Odd
Bodkins againRespectfully
Katharine Ayala

"IN MEMORY"
It will be a year this coming Aug. 17, that the Cause
of Freedom was dealt a mortal blow in Nevada County
and the State of California,
when the county Sheriff and
three Deputiescameto our
home upon a complaint issued and signed by theN. I. D,
Board of Directors against
Val D, and Lilly Belle Baims,
forcing us off our place.
The complaint paper read:

The people of Nevada

gutless, while we two were

need of mental-treatment

There we were abused and
mistreated for five and six
months respectively. We
were deprived of all our Civil
