Monday night at the Music Circus in Sacramento, Many of you have seen the Hollywood version of Molnar’ Liliom, the story of Billy Bigelow, the tough carousel barker and his marriage to Julie Jordan, the dreamy eyed girl who fell in love with the fantasy of the carousel, In order to get money for the arrival of Julie's baby, Bigelow andhis jailbird friend, Jigger Craigin, plan aholdup which leads to Billie's death. Fifteen years. later, Billy ‘is allowed to use his privilage of a visit to earth to see his child, Louise, and give her hope through a shining star and to beg forgiveness from Julie who has kept his love in her dreams, Having seen the Hollywood movie many people have no 4H’ers To Provide Medical Care Disks " GRASS VALLEY --The Hi-4H group will cooperate with an association called MedicAlert in providing disks that give the wearers blood type, allergies to penicillin or another antibiotic, and special problems of heart trouble, diabetes or, other diseases. The metal disks are made in various styles and can be worn around the neck as a medalion or on a bracelet. The Hi-4H'ers have chosen the job of calling these safety medals tothe attention of the public as part of their year's project in health and safety activities, Information can be obtained by calling Terry Meekins. Her number is 273-4750. Bus Line Adds Stop TOWN TALK---Beginning today the T win Cities Busline will stop at Sierra Memnoon visiting hours. Al Casey, manager, announced theschedule as being from Nevada City to the hospital starting at 1:30 p.n. and ending each day on the 3:30 run. Grass Valley passengers may catch the 2 p.m. orial Hospital during after-; desire to see the stage play. It is interesting to see the differerit approach and atmosphere set by the two mediums. Director Milton Lyon has set a fastertempoanda more "make believe" atmosphere than the Hollywood version.
His characters are less realistic. The impromptu sets of Applauds Latest Production round staging allow the aud, tence to be carried away by imagination, The technical direction and lighting effected changes of mood and time in a smooth manner. Jane Johnston as Carrie Pepperidge, Julie's best friend, just about stole the show. Her "promised" Mr. Snow, the herring fisherman was portrayed by an almost unbelieveable Mr. Five by Five, Robert Miller Driscoll. Carolyn Maye gave to Julie the tenderness and sensitivity of a romancestricken young girl, Her lovely voice imparted full rich meaning to her solos, Stewart Rose's portrayal of Bill was both cocky and egotistic, traits well suited to the barker of the carousel. He gave the part the confused immaturity of a man who cannot understand a love like julie's. The dancing was excellent both in choreography by Vivian Ainslie and in perfor= mance made tricky by the small stage. Melanie Alexander as Louise Bigelow, the daughter of Julie and Billy, showed the loneliness and easily crushed hopes of a girl continually teased about the reputation of her dead father. Andthen--the music. Who will ever decide which is the greatest Rodgers and Hammerstine show? Carousel certainly is one of the best.
