AN APPLE FOR THE COMPUTER
One of the: very concerned complaints against
modern large-class education is its impersonality,
its alienation of the student who needs and seeks
personal attention and encouragement.
The cloud has a silver lining. Speaking before a
study group of the Commonwealth Club of California, Professor Patrick Suppes of Stanford’s School’
of Education suggested that computers offer probably the only possibility for personalized teaching.
He pointed out how in a computerized mathematics
class the electronic brain can give each student a set
of problems geared to his needs, tell him if his answers are correct or, after several unsuccessful tries,
give him the answer. .
The crowning, personal touch comes at the end
of the lesson. The types out the message, computer

At which point we wouldn’t blame poor, computerweaned Fred to tear.off and become a dropout.

HOW TO.TAN YOUR HIDE
Do you believe that you can’t get a sunburn
ona aera day?. . . or that ig baby oil
or mineral oil will keep you from burning?
These are just two common fallacies that
have caused many a sunbather to do a slow
burn when he or she discovered the truth the
hard way. The difference between tanning
your. hide and roasting it depends a great
deal on how much you know about the sun,
and how carefully you follow some basic
rules. The sun’s strength varies with the time
and place—and the sensitivity of people’s
skin differs. Don’t get careless about the sun
on an overcast day—those “burning” ultraviolet rays can penetrate mist and clouds!
Do use a lotion that filters out the sun’s burning rays and lets the ones that tan your hide
come through. A tip-filled story about your
place in the sun.
