Few people: know the first or middle name of Nevada City’s Chief of Police. Locally, ‘and to former residents of Nevada County, he is known as “J. J.” Jackson, His parents named -him after his father: Josiah James. The elder Jackson was familiarly call-. ed “Si.” He was at one time a partner in the grocery business with William. (Billie) Richards, father of Marian Libbie: Si establsihed the “Bee Hive” Grocery on Commercial Street just below where it is intersected by Pine Street, and ran it until his death in 1926. He served Nevada County a four-year term’ as county treasurer. Senior Jackson's daughter Grace married the Honorable Harry L. Englebright, congressman from this district, and took a prominent part in society at Washington, D. C. cally all his life in this. commuYoung J. J. has spent. practinity. He was born in’ Oakland, but only because Nevada City’s two doctors at the time< oe Miller and A.’ H. Tickell) were both good friends: of Si, and he did not wish to. make a choice of who was to preside at -the birth. So he sent his wife Mamie to Fabiola Hospital. Jay went through school in Nevada City and then to Santa Clara College, where he took a business courses. Returning home, he went in business with his father and continued until 20 years ago when he decided to go into law enforcement work on. the local police force. He became chief on November 1, 1950. . Nevada City had three police. # men in 1939, It now has five. Besides Chief Jackson, there. are Patrolmen Clarence Martz, who lives on Wet Hill; Clyde Garwood on-Park Avenue; Frank Milne on Martin Street, and Harold Knox on Coyote Street. These officers know Nevada City, its people and its problems. They keep the peace here with understanding, courtesy and firmness. They alternate on three shifts of eight hours each, daily. J.J. Jackson and Thelma Pierce a graduate of Nevada City High School, were. married in. 1926. They live at 118 Boulder Street, two doors from where Jay spent} his boyhood. Deputy Grand President Mae Norton was escorted to her station. ~ As the regular meeting date in January ,the first Friday,-falls on New Years Day, it. was announced that the méeting will be held a week later, on January 8.
