Decision On What To Keep, Disgard By Dean Thompson (T his is the sixth in a series of articles on topics discussed at a Small City Conference, sponsored by the University of California, Davis, held in Nevada
City Oct. 26 and 27) Allan Temko, architectural andurban critic of the San Francisco Chronicle, has a reputation for saying what he feels and letting the chips fall where they may. It was no surprise, therefore, when he described his drive from Grass Valley to Nevada City and hadthistosay about the strip development: "As we drove. along and saw what is happening to this beautiful part of the world, I would have stepped on the gas... We can tear it down someday. I'm afraid we'll have to, " Temko emphasized that the problem facing cities today include a decision on what should be kept and what thrown away. Inthe south side of Chicago there is nothing to save, he said. But here, Temkosaidthe problem involves nature and there is a good deal left that is largely natural, "This part of California remains one of the most precigus and beautiful places know," he said. Temko described Nevada City as a charming pioneer town that is living, active, productive, and a flourishing community today. "It is worth saving," he said, “It must be saved, ' Temko said that small cities, in order not to perish, must think of their structure and ward off excessive growth. He cited Lake Tahoe and Yosemite as areas where beauty has been marred by growth beyond the capacity of the area to absorb people. and retain beauty. “Our task isnot to ruin what we have, but to make what we have better," he said. "Consider the community as a whole. " He cited the need for education leading to preservation of the good, and said, “All of us have a moral obligation to join with our fellow citizens to carry the fight forward. “ “We are all designers, “" Temko said. “We design either actively, orwe design by default.
