and for four years was County Treasurer.
Aman named Diamond, an employment agent at Los Angeles, collected
$2.50 each from some 200 laborers,
a. who were to be put at work on arailroad in San Fernando valley, and then
skipped. There was no work for
them.
At Redbird, Clay county, Kentucky,
last week there was an affray between
the Sizmore gang and their enemies,
in which ‘“‘Bud”’ Carsmuth and ‘‘ Black
Bill’ Sizmore were killed and ‘ Robert
pel Sizmore and one of the Garrisons bad-+
ly wounded.
¢ Sarah Long, a disreputable woman,
went to the home of H.C., Arrington,
three miles from Tullahoma, Tennes-,
absence, and on being refused food,
killed Mrs. Arrington by beating her
with a heavy bludgeon. F
‘J. V. Knapp, a Marquette, Michigan,
banker, suspended Monday morning
and the bank is now in the hands of a
receiver. The liabilities are about
$50,000. The suspension was caused
by hard collections and a jarge draft
which could not be met.
Pee & Thomas Harris, agperchant doing
i business at Cove, Ark., was sentence
L 4 so two years’ imprisonment for murder, but was lately pardoned the act
: having been found to have been com-;,? mitted in self-defense, On his return
‘ee home his neighbors gave him a grand
‘ovation.
M. W. Merriam, an eccentric Saffolk
ecunty, N. Y., school-master, willed
; his property in bulk to the ‘United
» States Government. One of his
reasons was the Government was rich
and could fight his sister if she attempted to contest the will. Hle was
worth about $100,000.
A remnant of the Cliff-Dwellers, supposed to have been extinct, is said to
be dwelling in the San Matoe Mountains, N. M. They are very small,
not over three feet in height, and wild.
They have been also in the Black
Range, and as soon as the snow melts
parties will go ont to capture them if
possible. These facts are-~vétiched
for by reliable men at Albuquerque.
At Butte, Montana, Monday, John
giant powder on the stove of his cabin
for the purpose of thawing the substance, it being frozen. The powder
soon exploded with terrific effect,
wrecking the whole interior of the
house. Talkar was blown through
the door into the street in a dazed
condition, but miracuously escaped
any other injury.
At Santa Paula last Saturday night
in a hotel kitchen, a Chinese cook
insulted a white waiter girl, which
was resented by a colored porter
named Richard A. Brown. The
Chinese cook and his heathen assistant attacked the negro with a butcker
knife and a cleaver, Brown defending
himself with a chair, which was
finally cut to pieces. Then he drew a
revolver and shot and mortally wounded the cook. Brown gave himself np.

Says the Sanitary Inspector regarding exercising .care\ in drinking. -An exchange
notaces as a wise precaution the act of a
Philadelphia physician, who, while riding
in a railroad car, gave oneof his children a
drink of water by spreading a clean handkerchief over the top of the glass to prewent the contact of the child’s lips with the
tumbler. A still better expedient, with the
same object in view, has often been resorted to by the writer, and his children have
been instructed to practice the same precaution when obliged to drink from a mug
or tumbler on the cars, steamboats or at
public-drinking fountains. It consists im
bringing the lower edge of the drinkingcup beneath the lower lip, instead of letting
it eome in contact with the mucuous membrane of the mouth. Teach the children to
stick their whole bill into the cup when
they tukesa drink under such circumstances, for it avoids a real and considerable danger of infection from certain conBroke the Youth's Heart.
