Whoselaw ~—
The other day in San Francisco 56 clergymen aided and
abetted 89 draft-age youths in standing "afoul of the law" in
“anarchy and extremism.” The youths: placed their draft cards
in a church collection plate or a chalice, to be mailed to Gen,Lewis B, Hershey. ihe ee :
By doing so, according to one of their clerical abettors,
the stand “afoul of the law", But we appeal to a higher law,
God's law, written in our hearts." The speaker was Father Peter
Riga of St. Mary's College.
A good many years ago when the Man whom Father Riga
and many of his clerical draft-fighting colleagues worship as
God was confronted with a conflict between political and spiritual responsibility He invoked no "higher law" to condone civil
disobedience, He said: ''Render therefore unto Ceasar the things
which are Ceasar's; unto God, the things which are God's."
If Christ was wrong and Father Riga right, God's law. must
have been drastically amended, By by whom?
Sound Advice
Every once in a while some sound reasoning slips into
those "lovelorn" columns published in many daily papers.
This one, in Ann Lander's column, some time ago, we
belive hits the nail on the head, é
Some woman wrote the columnist, saying that she was
about to have nervous breakdown from the lack of sleep because
of her husband's snoring when he slept, kept her awake and was
rattling her nerves. The distraught woman asked the columnist
just what she should do about it,
Miss Landers replied simply and shortly with:
"Ask any widow."
A Suggestion
The federal bureaucracy has been busy of late launching
"truth" crusades; truth in advertising, truth in packaging, truth
in lending. Now another area is opened up; truth in spending.
Freshman Representative Robert V. Denny, of Nebraska
has proposed legislation requiring all Congressmen to include
in any bill an estimate of what the legislation would cost the
taxpayer in the first two fiscal years of its existence as law.
Further, the Denny bill would require the clerk of the House
to make twice-monthly reports on the estimated total cost of
all legislation previously passed in the session, as well as the
cost of all pending bills.
That the estimates would be inaccurate is admitted. All
governmental spending estimates are,....on the low side. But
there is merit to the Nebraskan's idea; the merit of keeping the
dollar sign well before the taxpayers' eyes,
We might suggest an addition to Denney's bill; copy the
edict of another federal crusader and require a label on every
bill warning that "This measure may be dangerous to your fiscal
health."
Sommersault
The title of this editorial is a deliberate pun, since it best
describes our subject--the astounding flip-flop made by the president of San Francisco State College, Dr. John H, Summerskill,
in the face of arrogant student pressure.
Dr. Summerskill is noted for his sympathetic attitude toward
student dissent and protest. When the editors of a collegesubsidized weekly tabloid, Open Process, published a filthy
poem by a perennial campus troub'emaker attacking a faculty
member, however, Dr. Summerskill suspended the publication,
its editor and the author. This should, of course, be routine on
any well-run campus, But at San Francisco State it was cause
for surprised public approval.
Not for long, however, Almost immediately Dr. Summerskill genuflected before a campus minority, said he was sorry
he had “acted improperly," and announced he had lifted the suspensions,
As the San Francisco Examiner put it, in that act of obeissance Dr, Summerskill must have become the first college president to join hands with student activists and anarchists in opposing the college president,
One wonders where the State College found a president like

NEVADA COUNTT NUGGEY Rough and Ready, Arise!
The NaiionalAutomobile Club we believe, is a fine or~~
ganization and we commend its efforts to promote travel within =~
the United States along with its safety campaigns. nie
However, out of its San Francisco office, 65 battery Street,
in its latest weekly press release to newspaper editors, with
the -heading, "A public ‘service from the National Automobile
Club," it has offered "Trip Tips,"
This particular release suggests that those planning a trip
should include Rough and Ready, "That colorful little ghost
town up in the Mother Lode country, which was well named.”
The release, indeed, paints a colorful and tourist-baiting
lure to visit the historical town, and as we began to read it,
became entused about it,
However, the last paragraph "did it." We quote:
"In a few short years, however, the goldwas gone and Rough
and Ready was gone too, Today all that remains of the tough
little town belies its belligerent past. There's just a few old
shacks resting in the shade of some aging trees in the center of
a green meadow in our own Sierra Nevada, Rough and Ready
just isn't very rough and ready any more,"
Whoa back!
We haven't been in Nevada County very long, but it didr't
take us more than our first day here to find out that Rough and
Ready was more than a "few old shacks resting in the shade of
some aging trees."
We have lived in many communities, from the east to west
coasts, and many in between, and never, no never, have we ever
Seen a more active and bustling community than this.
It's small, yes, but hardly does a day go by but what there's
re aa doing--we don't need to tell our readers that, they
ow it,
These "few old shacks” are obliterated by historical
; buildings, modern ‘stores and conveniences, The community
effort is beyond comparison, and the results that these efforts
attain are really astounding,
We invite that whoever. wrote this travelouge for the NAC
at least visit thre once before he or she attempts any further -;
"masterpieces" about the active little town. The Rough and Ready ;
ppcnonged of Commerce, we are sure, would gladly take them fora tour,
We also suggest that the club pull back this release before
it goes too far.
. Yes, Virginia, there is a Rough and Ready,
