Grass Valley — 273-9535 MON. thru SAT. = 8 to 6 Customer satisfaction at Broadway Beauty Shop 308 Broad Street in Nevada City In -some “underdeveloped” countries one sure sign of feminine beauty is the total absence of hair on the heads of the native women.in fact, the balder their "pates'’ the more beautiful they are considered. One might suspect an outrageous degree of male ego could be involved, because in those strange lands it is the man who sports a fancy head of hair usually dressed to indicate family status, thru the use of elephant dung and loaded with dried twigs leaves, snake skins or animal fur! Be that as it may, the writer believes it should be conceded that, in most respects, American women have a distinct edge on their menfolks because they've been getting themselves gussied up in beauty parlors for many, many years while the “new look" in male hairstyling hasn't been on the scene for so very long in our present society. Nevada County women have a wide range of choice among beauty establishments; and among those is the popular Broadway Beauty Parlor at 308 Broad Street in Nevada City, owned and operated by Mrs. Thelma Holloway since January 1, 1986. Thelma, a native of Colorado, attended a major beauty college in San Francisco before coming to Nevada County in 1934, She obtained a job at the Broadway Beauty Shop, then known as Bowman's ..and two years later purchased the business which she has operated ever. since, The shop is open six days a week from 8 until 5 daily. All beauty services except electrol‘ysis are offered at popular prices. Included are a variety of fine permanent waves, the latest in high styling, pin-curl
and roll waving, any kind of shampoo desired, bleaching, tinting, tipping, hair cutting and shaping, manicures, wig sales and styling. Broadway Beauty Shop has four "stations" and an expert staff which includes Hazel Garcia, Sharon Jackson, Maureen Harris, and one of Thelma's daughters, Mary Ellen Penfrow. The Holloways, Thelma and Dan, are pleasantly situated residents of Nevada City and ardent promoters of life in the beautiful Sierra foothill country. They thoroughly enjoy camping and traveling when leisure time permits. They are the justifiably proud parents of a fine family.. daughter Mary Ellen and her husband have a darling little girl named Sherry; their other daughter, Thoris Ousley of Walnut Creek, and her husband are the parents of two young sons, Chris and Andy. Son David, 19, is a student at Sierra College.. where he actively participates in a number of campus events and projects. Mr. Holloway, whose interests have been in mining and trucking, has two grown sons.. Dan Wayne of Downieville, whose family includes two daughters and a son; and Earl, of Nevada City, who has a son and a daughter. A visit to the Broadway Beauty Shop provides its clientel with not only the latest in all lines of beauty care, but a welcome period of relaxation ina friendly atmosphere. Hazel has been with the shop for many years, coming here from an earlier position in a Grass Valley beauty salon. Mary Ellen has worked with her mother for the past ten years. Sharon has chalked up seven years of service to customers there..and Maureen, who has been there for just five months, is establishing a good following. Customer satisfaction is the keynote at Broadway Beauty Shop..and may be obtained by calling for an appointment at your earliest convenience, Just dial 265-4207 and make your dreams of beauty care at its best come true! Residents in meeting on area problems Twenty four residents of the Gold Flat, Sneath Clay and Pinewoods roads arearecently met to discuss mutual problems and named Ken Uhl chairman of their group. They identified their priority problem as shooting and the disappearance of family pets, especially dogs. They complained that firing of guns late at night is a real nuisance. Two property owners said they found bullet holes in their roofs after hearing shots. NC hires Bishop Nevada City Councilmen tentatively hired Nick Bishop as the city's planning consultant for an eight-month period to bring the general plan and zoning ordinance into conformity. Bishop said he tentatively set $38 as his salary for the eight months but would present a formal contract as soon as possible for the council's consideration, He also told the council "that the heat is off'' as the deadline for conformity of general plans and zoning ordinances has been postponed until June 30, 1973. The deadline had been Dec, 31, 1972. Bishop told the councilmen he worked as assistant planner for Placer county for six years, for the Office of Economic Opportunity for four coun.ties (El Dorado, Placer, Yolo and Sacramento) for two years, for Sierra Economic Development District preparing an application for HUD (Housing and Urban Development) and now has a part time job in Yolo county. "My superior in Yolo county knows I'm here tonight and agreed beforehand that I could work part time elsewhere," he told the councilmen.
