COOK’S CORNER
FESTIVE PUNCH
During the holiday festivities your entertaining is simplified
by some practical shortcuts in preparing punch..
ROSY SHERRY PUNCH: Reconstitute a six-ounce can of
frozen Orange juice and combine with 1 bottle of dry sherry wine,
1 pint of Cranberry juice and 1 large bottle of club soda. Cut
three or four small navel oranges into thin slices to use as a
garnish, Just before serving, add the mixture to a block of ice
in your large punch bowl or to ice cubes ina large pitcher;
using only one-half the mixture at a time, Add soda just before
serving. Yield: 36 punch cup servings.
Penn Valley News
by Elsie Dillberg
Penn Valley has snow! Isn't
that wonderful? That depends
on whether you belong to the
older or younger generation.
Snow started falling last Tuesday evening and we awoke to
a white world on Wednesday.
School was cancelled for Wednesday and Friday with the children going half a day on Thursday. The snow started falling
again on Thursday morning and
more snow fell that I have ever
seen in the valley. With the subfreezing temperatures, it didn't
take long for the streets to become sheets of ice. The sledding
down the Siesta Drive hill was
at its peak over the weekend
with tobogans and sleds, discs
and any other mode of travel
coming down the hill at top
speed. My Monday morning when
I type this column, the buses
were still chained up and running 45 minutes late. We had
about ten high-schoolers waiting in the entry hall, as the
temperature was a cool 10 degrees,

Barbara Nix called me last
Monday to give me her new
phone number over at Lake of
the Pines. Sure do miss the
Nix family, with all their teenagers and young people coming
and going, there was always
something new happening,

Bill and Maggie Dwyer and
Bill's mother, Sue Dwyer spent
last Tuesday in Reno, They encountered car trouble when they
started for home and then they
got caught in the storm coming
over the summit. They returned home tired and cold only to
find the storm already near.
Patti and Cindy spent the night
with us and Lisa was in her
glory, to have some girls to
play with for a change.
Guests for Ellie and Diane
Pettigrew last week were Dick
and Shirley Carroll from Aledo,
Illinois. Dick is an antique airplane enthusiast and he and Shirley were enroute to Las Vegas
from Oregon and they got caught
in the storm in Oregon, Ellie
drove to the Marysville airport
to pick them up. :
We have had good and bad
luck in the last week. With the
freezing weather, our pond froze
over a solid two inches thick
and our duck family was forced
to retreat to the ground and
during the night Saturday, something came in we yard and killed all three. We found them
Sunday with puncture wounds.
We feel especially sad because
we lost our male mallard, he
was such a pretty bird. The
mother duck was pekin and the
daughter was a cross between
the two. But on the brighter
side, puppy Mathilda found a
home on Sunday. She will stay
with us until Christmas because she is going to be a
Christmas present for a couple
of children in Grass Valley.
That is the last of the mini
Dachshunds as we are keeping
one for ourselves.

(Dora) for tickets. Dora Grieme
