Preparations For Winter
The saying that “Everybody talks about the weather,
but nobody does anything about it’”’ doesn’t apply to Pacific
Gas and Electric Company. It has an extensive program,
particularly among its hydroelectric and power maintenance forces.
Long before the first dark grey clouds begin frowning
over the Sierra Nevada and the Coast Ranges, t#é turning
calendars at myriad PG&E locations summon a wide variety
of annual preparations into action. Within recent weeks, for example, the “getting-ready-forwinter” routines have sent men
penetrating remote mountain
areas so that—
—Anti-freeze fluid will
snow gauges: functioning
—Stand-by engines are fueled to
keep mountain-top communications relay points operating if
storms break the electric supply
—Emergency cabins are stocked
with food, fuel and warm bedding for. linemen, patrolmen,
snow surveyors or others who
work in stormy weather.
~—Earth movers and snow machinery are on hand to fight
slides
—Heating devices will keep rain
gauges from freezing a
——Oil will prevent the freezing o
air valves that protect penstocks
against collapse should water be
blocked from sweeping down
through the huge pipes to powerhouses.
_ Many are the other routine
jobs of preparedness, all aimed
at keeping electric—and gas—
supplies adequate when the public needs them the most. Winter
radiator fluid is distributed in as
keep
much as hundred-gallon lots for
PG&E vehicles operating in low
temperature areas. A special alcohol dripping in gas transmission mains will prevent ice crystals from forming inside the pipe.
Several hundred snowshoes and
skis have been re-finished and
distributed. Snow tires and tire
chains have been placed where
needed. Canals have been lowered
or drained for’regular maintenance. Backwoods roads have
been smoothed and their gutters
and culverts cleared to lessen the
possibility. of washouts — even
those roads which, with good
luck, won’t have to be used before
next spring.
Extra reels. of power lines,
spare poles. and.crossarms, and
the “pole hardware” needed to install replacements,-are stocked at
strategically locatéd warehouses
where they can be collected quickly when high winds and rainsoaked earth combine to fell trees
across power fines or whip the
lines apart. In remote canyons,
along whose walls canals transport water, lumber is floated to
storage points for use in the
event of winter damage to thecanals.

Heat Tips
Here’s a list of ways by which
PG&E suggests you can stretch
your heating dollar farther:
—Keep your. drapes or curtains drawn over windows whenever they’re not needed for outside light. Glass allows heat,to escape from a room to the outside.
—For year-round economy,
long runs of hot water pipes can
be insulated.
—The fire place flue should be
closed when the fireplace is not in
use. Much heat can be drawn up
the chimney otherwise.
—Setting your furnace therFor example, the furnace won’t
heat the house or room up to 70
degrees any faster by setting it:
at 80. If you set it at 80, you
will overheat and waste fuel.
—Reducing the heat a few degrees while you sleep saves money. Leaving the furnace on at a
reduced thermostat setting will
save fuel and still will provide
comfort overnight. A setting of
about six degrees below normal
is recommended. The thermostat
needs to be returned only to its
normal setting in the morning.
—Don’t leave windows or doors
open when the furnace is on. If
you want to ventilate a room,
close the furnace outlet there
and shut the door to close the
room off from the rest of the
house.
—Some furnaces and heaters
are too small for the area they
are meant to serve. If you can’t
get sufficient warmth, see your
furnace man.
—Kitchen fans can pull much
heat from a house, so open a
kitchen window slightly when
the fan is in use.
—Repair any léaky hot water
faucets. One can waste up to 40
cents worth of heated water in
a month.
