Teachers Discuss Approaches To Education
"Let your child have
time to dream and grow,"
was the theme of the panel discussion conducted
by Jean Haley, Amy Obeeland, and Ann Partington for the Tall Pines
Nursery School Mother's
monthly meeting Nov. 21.
Mrs. Haley, who teaches
first grade at Nevada
City Elementary School,
was concerned with parental tendencies to push
children beyond their abilities, both mental and
.physical. She felt there
has been too much writtenin popular magazines
about the teaching of
reading to pre-school
children, especially to
those who seem eager to
learn. The danger lies,

All three teachers had
suggestions for parents
who wanted to help their
children become ready to
read. Mrs. Obenland,
special reading teacher,
Grass Valley district,
advised parents to read
good literature aloud to
stimulate children's interest in. reading, to
teach them to handle
books, to visit the library, and to share experiences with them that will
give their later reading
meaning.
Mrs. Partington, who
teaches Kindergarten at
Bell Hill School, reminded parents to be human,
sincere, and honest with
the child, to encourage
his self-epression through conversation as well
as through creative materials, andto respect the
child's uniqueness.

their children become

Inthe absence of President Kathy Eacobacci,
Vice-president Joan Gilbert conducted the business meeting. The mothers voted to purchase a
