NUGGET By DAVE BLAKE Nevada Union's 14th annual Football Awards . Banquet was a complete -. success with over 200 players and parents attending. The post season banquet which was held in the Nevada City Elks, to award letters, cerificates of merit, and such trophies as Best Back, Most Valuable Player, and Best Attitude. A delicious steak dinner preparedby Chef Bill G. Hidotti, was the first phase of the program, after dinner Master of Ceremonies Kieth Scolas instrduced frosh Coaches Ben Barry and Don Spratt. Coach Barry, addressing the audience stated he was immensely proud of directing a group of boys with sucha great attitude. He also stated it was school policy for all freshmen to letter. Junior Varsity Coaches Jim Cunningham and Jim Phelan were next on the program. Letters were awarded, and the Junior Varisty's one trophy, Most Valuable Player was presented to End Greene Jenkins. Varsity Coaches Jim Guinn, Stu Smith, and Dwayne Dirstan were introduced and were followed by admiring applause. Coach Guinn stated that overall the Miner's (6-3 .record) played outstanding football, pardon one game against Oakmont. He like everyone else was sorry that the Champion‘BEST BACKS AWARDS-are shown here as Coach SPORTS’ shipwas not ours, but he also added with 13 returning lettermen things would be different ina short time. The Coaches withthe assistance of Stan Halls then presented trophies to outstanding varisty players. Best Attitude-was awarded toSenior DAN KOPP, although Dan didn't letter he was a contiruting inspiration to the team, by giving 100% effort all the time. Best Back-Because of the closeness of the rating two awards were given; the honors were shared by DEL FURANO and CHRIS VAN VLIET, who will return next year. Best Linemen-was also shared by two players GARY DESPIN and cocaptain DAVE BLAKE. Best Defense -was awarded to Middle Line Backer STEVEN READER. Most Valuable Playerco-captain BUTCH ELLIS, Butch who plays split-end caught over 60, receptions for 900 plus yards, he alsodida standout job on defense. Best Back Awards were received by two juniors who will again play next year. Best linemen awards were given to two
defensive linemen, which testifies to Nevada Unions hard hitting defense, and BUTCHELLIS, known for his great ability locally also gained State recognition, by being named to Northern Superior California Third Team All Stars. Guinn congratulates Chris Van Fliet on a tine season. Pictured in the middle is Del Furano who is also a recipient of this award.
