HEARD ON CAMPUS
In January .N.U, will lose two of its staff members. Mrs, Steele, who has dominated the
attendance office for the last 16 years is retiring. In these years she has heard every excuse
for being tardy and-absent imaginable, and many not so imaginable,
Vince Cortez, ‘after many years of service as head custodian, is also retiring. He has
always faithfully completed the sad task of cleaning up after us, I am sure that they.both will
be missed.

On December 17, a Sacramento news correspondent from KPFA talked to the Journalism
I classes. Kirk C, Smith, the correspondent, discussed Journalism law and how it applies to
school newspapers. KPFA is a non-commercial, listener supported radio station for Northern
California,

The Key Club is sponsoring a Christmas dance, Friday, December 17, The dance will
be from. 8 p.m. until 12, and dress is casual, All the profits will go to the Key Club general
fund for future activities. Howard Fickle is the dance chairman.

The Civics and Freshmen Orientation classes had Mr, Harvey, a CHP officer, visit them
to talk and answer questions, Mr. Harvey did not give a prepared talk but rather let the students
ask questions, complain.and choose the topics for discussion. There was much gained from his
visit as many misconceptions and other problems were’ cleared up.
The FTA (Future Teachers of America) had the beautiful Christmas spirit with their
"toys for tots" project. The FTA members held a cake’sale and with the profit purchased toys
for their project. This: club has done a fantastic job in volunteering the toys and their time for
repairing them.

A curriculum committee consisting of students and teachers has been formed, The committee's . objectiveis. to find a solution to making classes more interesting for the turned-off
students, “Many. students, have been placed in classes their counselors felt they needed, or-for
the lack: Of ‘roomiu’ other classes. In these cases many times the students just lose interest,
One idea the cotnniittee has is a process of registration whereby a student may choose his
teachers. Hopefully this will eliminate the uninterested feelings of some students, The committee, which meets after school on Mondays is working with district superintendent Gerald Gelatt.
