Geraldine Olson title of Junior Miss Tears of bappiness trickled. on the cheeks of Geraldine Olson as she made the walk as Grass Valley's ideal 1971 high school girl, . A standing room audience at Lyman Gilmore School gave the newly crowned winner of the Grass Valley Junior Miss Pageant a standing ovation. The crowning of Miss Olson climaxed an excellent evening of entertainment. Miss OJson is a senior at Nevada Union Eigh School. Her favorite subjects are music and psychology. She.is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Wallace Olson of Grass Valley. Runner-up inthe Junior Miss Pageant was Sharon Law, Miss Law was the winner of the creative and performing award. Karen Hill was the second runnerup and the youth fitness winner, Jennifer Jackson was named Miss Congeniality. . After the excitement of being named Junior Miss her family and friends congratulated her back stage. All she could say was "I'm so excited."" In January Miss Olson will represent Grass Valley in the state Junior Miss Pageant, This year's pageant was titled "The Impossible Dream," Sue Sefton, the 1971 Grass Valley Junior Miss opened the ceremony by singing "The Impossible Dream." She was accompanied on the piano by John Kartozain. After the youth fitness route, Master of Ceremonies Nave Darin introduced each contestant and their talent portion ‘of the program. Miss Olson sang "Come Saturday Morning" Karen Hill displayed her emotions of art, in ballet form; Jennifer Jackson did impressions of "Geraldine" from the Flip Wilson Show; Eileen Rose sang "Why"; Penni Fletcher did a sketch entitled "I'm Five"; Linda Huntly played an organ solo, the 'Musetta Waltz from Puccinis La Boheme"; Sharon Law danced a ballet to the music of Oklahoma; and Debbie LaBianco sang a song titled "My Favorite Things." The purpose of the Junior Miss Pageant is to find the ideal high school girl, I is not a beauty contest, Girls are judged on poise and appearance, 15 per cent; youth fitness, 15 per cent; scholastic achievement, 15 per cent; judges' interview, 35 per cent and creative and performing arts, 20 per cent. . The judges for this year's pageant were Walt Sady, Malcolm Hammill, Mayor John Rankin, Jessica Waracka and Hattie Rodrigues. Grass Valley Jaycees sponsor the annual event. This year's chairmen were John Kart and Larry Thomson. $171,127 grant WASHINGTON, C.C. California will receive $171,127 in federal funds for preservation of historic properties.
