Bennett Ackerly Penhall, one of the most noted mining men
of the Mother Lode’ died on New Year's Day following a heart
attack. Born in England in 1853, he had lived in Grass Valley
for 59 years; and was noted for his great integrity as a man and
as an engineer.
Early in January, a giant spruce tree more than 100 feet
tall and three feet in diameter, weighted with snow in a storm
"sreater than that in 1890,"’ toppled by high winds and crashed
into the office of the Nevada County Lumber Co. It narrowly
missed the area in‘which Miss Georgia Donnelly, secretary to
manager Fred Conner, was working.

Dept. proposed a "community effort" to clearn the Snow Moun‘tain Ditch so that the city reservoirs might be replenished,

A special train-load of lumber rolled into Nevada City
in May, on the narrow gauge railroad. A total of 70,000 board
feet was consigned to the Nevada Lumber Co. It was the first
time in 16 years that a special train had been run over the
N.C.N.G. The load was destined to be used in construction of
a CCC Camp in North Bloomfield,

Mrs. Helena Dahneke, 95, died at her home in North San
Juan in July, She was born in Germany in 1838, and came to
the United States in 1856. Mrs, Dahneke, a "highly respected
and beloved gentlewoman," was one of town's earliest pioneers.

In October, Joe Lopez, who had the mail contract between
Nevada City and Washington, purchased a load of lumber to
construct a cottage for his stage drivers and relief men at
Central House on top of Washington grade. The grade was then
considered one of the worst stretches of roadway in the high
mountains, especially in winter. A sleigh and horses picked up
the mail there and carried it about two miles down-grade,
where a carrier on skis made the rest of the trip down the
steep nountain to the remote community,

In December, the Bank of America purchased the First
National Bank of Grass Valley, according to announcement by
William F. Morrish, pres.
The Sheriff's office installed and began to use a new set
of criminal photographic equipment for making "mug shots."Maurice Koch, Grass Valley photographer, supervised the inSstallation and was placed in charge of the department.
