Shown here at Skaar, Dorothy Gilberg, Nevada County Employees Will Hold Their Annual Christmas Party The annual Christmas dinnerdance sponsored by the Nevada County Employees Association will be held tomorrow night in the Grass Valley Veterans Memorial Building. An invitation hasbeen extended to all department heads, county employees, retired employees and their guests, The festivities will start at 8 p.m. A buffet supper will be served during the evening and there will be dancing from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tickets will be available at the door. Vehicle Use Takes Big Jump The affinity of Californians and motor vehicles was reaffirmed last year when the state highway system absorbed 42,800,000, 000 miles of travel -or the equiva~ lent of 89,500 round trips to the moon, This was an increase of 3,800,000,000 vehicle miles over 1963 and all the gain was chalked up on freeways. There actually was a slight decline in the number of miles traveled on expressways and conventional highways. These facts and many others concerning travel and accidents on the California state highway system in 1964 are contained in arecently completed report compiled by the California Division of Highways in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Public Roads, The number of accidents -115,453 -was up 13,600 over 1963 and the accident rate -~ 2.7 per million vehicle miles -an increase over the 2,6 rate experienced in 1963. Freeways were far safer than other highways for only 31,075 accidents occurred on them and . 84,378 mishaps took place else~ where in the system. There were only 1,619 miles of freeway inthe 14, 268-mile state highway system but they carried over 49% of the traffic. . In the Los Angeles area, where
248 miles of freeway are located, the average number of trips per day was 2,674,000 and each trip averaged 9,61 miles in length. The most heavily populated stretch was the 48-mile long San Diego Freeway with a daily average of 694,000 trips of 7.79 miles duration, In 1964, this freeway accounted for 1, 900,000,000 miles ‘of travel. In the San Francisco Bay area, the average number of daily free~ way trips was 1,208,000 with an average length of 8,22 miles. The Bayshore Freeway carried the most vehicles -569,000 -on trips averaging 7.52 miles. This ratio was magnified to even greater proportion in Los Angeles where 248 miles of freeway -sixteen one-hundreths of one percent of all California streets, roads and highways -carried 10.7% of all vehicle travel in thestate. These same 248 miles comprise only 1.7% of the State highway system, yet they carried 22%} of all travel on the entire system.
