Beherns, dealers in grain and hay and proprietors of the Empire Hotel, and Joseph E. Bell. The town has excellent schools. Mrs. D. M. Coleman is principal. The town has the honor of having the oldest Masonic Lodge in the State,— Western Star, No. 2. The lodge at San Francisco was organized the same month, and the brethren at Shasta waived their claim to No. 1 and took 2. There is also in the town a lodge of the I. O. O.
