Have just returned from avery
profitable trip to Paradise and
Magalia, California where Mr.
Herbert Hugo, vice president of
our organization, and myselfhad
the honor and pleasure of installing the officers and presenting
the charters for two more chapters, One that I am expecially
proud of is our second Mobile
Home Owners on private property in California. This is the
Sierra-Del-Ora Chapter 279
Magalia, California,
Sierra-Del-Ora is a large
subdivision containing approx.
600 lots ranging from one to
5 acres of land in beautiful pine
tree country. Already 450 of
these parcels have been sold,
and more coming in each week,
Some of these homes are in the
$20,000 to $25,000 category and
really beautiful.
The other chapter is in the
Sawmill Mobile Park in Paradise, California. This is a
smaller park but very lovely,
’ and these nice people are going
to open their doors and hearts
to the many mobile home owners
around them that are living on
private land, and believe me
this is news as so many of the
parks hate those on private land,
feeling that all should be in the
I think that a person should be
allowed to live where he wants
to, as long as his place is kept
neat and complies with all local
and state laws and ordinances,
and I can certainly verify that
96 per cent of those on private
property do this.
Many new laws are in the
making at this time that will
affect us, and we are gettingorganized in a tighter unit so we
can fight those that will affect
us adversely, and believe me
there are many of these types
in the hopper.
Will have news from our
parks here next week, but Ihave
been traveling so many places
that I have had no time to contact those that furnish the news.
DeGAULLE CALLED
It is far too serious a matter to take lightly, but
those of us with average ignorance as to the esoteric
complexity of international money matters can’t help
getting a bit of perhaps perverse satisfaction out of
President DeGaulle’s galling dilemma over the fate of
the franc.
It is too easy to remember the days not long past
when Le Grande Charlie was pontificating high in the
fiscal stratosphere, imperiously and deliberately creating money crises in other nations, while accepting
lavish aid from some. His delusions of glory for France
blinded him to economic realities. He now is finding
out that as John Donne said of mankind, no nation is
an island, and the fiscal bell is tolling for France.
As we said, it is no time for gloating, tempting as
that may be. The free world must hope that all nations
can by their own and mutual endeavors secure their
economic position against the serious threats that con_stantly face it.

For the chronic alcoholic, »
"sobering up" means more than
a headache and an upset stomach,
Drinkers who have been alcoholics for several years. or
longer may damage their nervous system and develop delirium tremens--colloquially
known as the "DT's" or the
"shakes," ecaner .
As recently at the 1930s, from
20 to 40 per cent of patients
hospitalized with delirium tremens died. ~.
This statistic is cited by Conrad Acton, MD, of Baltimore,
who contrasts the '30s with the
‘60s in describing a new treatment program. Now, he says,
fewer than 1 per cent of his alcoholi¢ patients die--although
drying them out is still "no
push-button business,"
Dr. Acton has tested his
method of treatment on thousands of alconolics admitted to
the infirmary ‘of the Baltimore
City Jail. Nearly all had delirium tremens, or were on the
verge, er .
His immediate goal is to control the patient's mental and
physical agitation which, if unchecked, can somtimes lead to
death, For this purpose a tranquilizer is needed.
Dr. Acton has employed,
a number of tranquilizingdrugs.
One proved to have a too-dangerous side effect; another, although safer, was ineffective in
sever cases,
But a tranquilizer called Mellaril was potent enough even for
severe cased, while causingrelatively few side effects. "Its
effectiveness: and safety," Dr.
Acton reports, "have been borne
out in the treatment of more
than 11,000 patients."

Alcoholics are where you find
them. Those treated in the Baltimore Jail were mostly drifters
from Skid Row, but that's by
no means always the case. Ninety-five per cent are job-holders,
according to C, E. Schoettlin,
assistant professor of public

I’d like to remind you that if you’re calling
long distance to loved ones this Christmas telephone
lines can be overloaded during the holidays. Why not
put your calls through before Christmas and avoid
possible frustration and delay. It’s best to know the
area code and the number ahead of time and dial the
call yourself. Calling during off hours, like in the afternoon, should put you through more quickly, too. And
midnight to 7 AM allow you to dial direct station-tostation anywhere outside of California in the continental U.S.A. (except Alaska) for 75¢ or less for the
first three minutes. For example, you can call when

Why not start your
Christmas shopping with a
trip to the Yellow Pages.
It’s fast, easy. I’ve discovered that the Yellow
Pages offer a whole lot of
ideas about what to give
for Christmas.. helps
solve many problems in
finding gifts, even those
unusual ones.
