Revenue from tax stamps
on real estate sales during the
first six months of 1968 amounted to $18,309 in Nevada county,
with the county government getting $17,872 and the two cities
the balance.
According to the California
Taxpayers Association, revenue
will be much greater than beHeved possible when the new
tax was authorized more than a
year ago.
_ Prior to January 1, the federal government collected and
retained revenue from its documentary stamps. CTA ‘states
that the California law has
better tools for enforcement.
The tax basically is at the same
rate as that imposed by the federal government.
Leonard J. Hooper, Sacramento County Recorder, has
compiled the receipts from the
tax for the first six months. I
shows a statewide total of $6,633,693.86, ‘with $2,182,229.55
going to cities and $4,451,464.31 going to counties. In contrast the Internal Revenue Service reported that for the full
fiscal year which ended June
30, 1967 revenue from the tax
~ for all of California, Nevada and
Hawaii, was $6,359,730.90.
Based upon this, the income for a full year in California was estimated at $5 to
$5.5 million, Thus in six months
the income is greater than the
estimates indicated they would
be for a full year.
The new state tax should become a good guide to economic
conditions if it continues be be
well enforced, The revenue goes
to cities and counties according
to actual site of sale.
The rate is 55 cents per $500
of sale value, including only new
money involved. Thus a sale
where a buyer assumes an old
trust deed requires tax only for
. the amount paid to the old buyer
for his interest. The law was
changed this year by the legislature so stamps need not be
purchased, Instead the tax will
be paid directly to county re+) . ) Real estate stamps net

Probation for
drug handler
Dolar James Steadman, 24,
was granted three years summary probation Thursday in Superior Court after pleading
guilty to dispensing a dangerous drug without a license.
The Grass“Valleyan was arrested late in October on a
grand -jury indictment charging
him with unlawfully furnishing
and giving away narcotics other
_ than marijuana, and not uponawritten perscription,
Steadman originally pleaded
innocent to the charge and was
scheduled for a jury trial. However, Judge Vernon Stoll Thursday allowed him to change the
plea from innocent to guilty.
The judge gave Steadman permission to seek employment in
Oregon.
However, probation termsrequire that the defendant submit
to search and seizure, and that
he waive extradition. Bail. of
$2,400 was exonerated.
Public. Defender William Hager and Dept. Dist. Atty. Ronald McMillen handled the defense
and prosecution respectively.
