6 — THE NEVADA COUNTY NUGGET — Thursday, December 18, 1975
(Gardners
Corner
California homes are alive
with color and thriving plants
this holiday season. Christmas
Cactus, Poinsettias, Azaleas
and Cyclemen to name a few.
Many others will receive
foliage plants, camellias,
dwarf citrus and bare root
roses as Christmas gifts. Here
are some tips to help you enjoy
all of the beauty your plants
have to offer.
First, if you have a plant
such as a Poinsettia or
Chrysanthemum and the pot is
wrapped in decorative foil,
make sure there is a hole in the
foil to allow proper drainage.
To be on the safe side place
saucers under all containers.
Some decorative containers
are porous or made of
material that allows enough
moisture to condense beneath
them to mar surfaces.
The California Association
of Nurserymen reminds us
that these plants are fresh
from the grower’s greenhouse
or field and were grown as
quickly as possible under
optimum conditions with
adequate levels of fertilizer.
Once these plants are placed
in your home during the short
days of winter their growth
rate will slow down considerably. This means that
they shouldn’t need any additional fertilizer for at least a
month.
As with all container plants
water only when the top two
inches of soil feels dry or only
very slightly moist. Determine
the proper lighting for foliage
plants to avoid shocking your
new arrivals. Flowering
plants such as Cyclamens and
Hyacinths will stay in bloom
longer if kept cool. Provide
adequate light for flowering
plants, too.
Container plants for outdoor
use such as Camellias and
Dwarf Citrus are best kept
outside in a sheltered area
until you are ready to plant
them. It may be chilly, but
don’t allow them to dry out in
the cold winds. Bare root roses
should be planted as soon as
possible in all but the very
coldest regions. Be sure to
keep the roots moist until
planting time.
Your Christmas plants are
special plants meant to be
enjoyed during the holidays.
With a little care, they can go
on giving you pleasure long
into the New Year.
Garden checklist
— especially fruit trees —
should be pruned now. Don’t prune spring-flowering
shrubs and trees until after bloom, however.
2. Snails and slugs love the cool weather. Scatter snail
bait to keep their population from building up.
3. Cabbage, Cauliflower, Brussels Sprouts, Beets,
Chard, Onions and Carrots may all be planted now.

section runs from Folsom to Forresthill with the
remaining section to Carson City, Nevada, expected to be
so designated by the U.S. Forest Service. The trail is
intended for hiking and horseback use.
The area is one of the few east-west trails over the
Sierra Nevada that is largely untouched by development.
45 MAX SPEED?
The state Energy Resources Conservation and
Development Commission has considered a 45 mile per
