. . Nevada Th
Three plans for the restoratfon
of the Nevada Theatre were
presented to the Nevada
Theatre Restoration Committee
and interested citizens at a
meeting at the Theatre
Wednesday.
The plans were presented by
Bruce West, a consulting
architect working for a
Sacramento architecture firm.
The first would require the
restoration and
modification of the theatre as it
presently exists. Changes would
be made inside the structure but
it would not be physically
changed on the exterior.
A second plan would call for a
wing to be built near the stage at
the rear of the theatre and the
staged moved back
approximately 12 feet. The first
plan would also call for the stage
to be moved back or the balcony
steepened to allow viewers in
the balcony to see the stage.
The third plan was the most
elaborate. It would call for the
construction of a lobby next to
the present theatre on the lot
bordering the wing adjoining the
stage to allow space for sets and
more room for actors. Also proposed was a seperate
building behind the theatre to be
used by actors as a dressing
room area.
Under the third plan a garden
would surround the proposed
lobby and a fly gallery, an
enlargement of the stage area to
allow sets to be lowered onto thé
stage, would be built.
Also contemplated under the
third plan were improvements
to the present foyer. :
. Bill Briggs, the chairman of
the Nevada Theatre Restoration
Committee, said that the theatre
has the option of purchasing the
lot that borders the building to
the north. Briggs said the
estimated cost of the lot would
be ‘‘about $20,000” and that, if it
was purchased, it would allow
the lobby and extension of the
stage area to be built. The
proposed garden would also lie
on the vacant lot.
Briggs said the restoration of
the front of the theatre will be
completed by the end of this
week. The project cost the
committee approximately
$25,000 and included
sandblasting of the theatre’s
front on Broad Street.
Comments from the audience
following the presentation. by
West included suggestions by
some that the theatre be
restored to its original look and
requests by others that it retain
its authentic appearance on the
exterior but be altered on the
interior to function as a-useful,
modern-day theatre.
?
Briggs evaluated the
comments received and said, in
his opinion, the theatre should
be built as described under the
third plan and that if the
committee couldn’t' raise
sufficient funds to cover the
costs of completing the project,
* it could be=cut down in areas.
Briggs stressed that the
theatre’s restoration is on the
threshold of beginning and that
all +s needed now is the funds to
