More Tall Tales bob Cheine OLS GOLD Of The Mines They Pulled The Plug In Tahoe To Flood The Mine By A. Foote-Leight Hamm Guest Columnist, (Three weeks ago Robert Paine invited us into this department as a guest. We accepted the invitation and presented a series of tall stories, With apologies to readers who prefer truth, we continue the presentation.) THE HOLE IN THE LAKE In the late Sixties when the Comstock Silver Boom in Virginia City was at its peak the Savage Mine was having its ups and downs, For several days ata time the huge pumps were unable to keep the water out of the mine, Larger pumps were installedtono avail, Stockholders dumped their stock on the San Francisco market, Although the Savage had produced much silver it was believed it would never be a big producer, Meanwhile the dumped stock at only a few dollars a share, was quietly bought up by a manipulator, After most of the shares had been purchased a mining miracle occured. In a few hours the pumps unwatered the Savage sump. Savage stock boomed. Asthe manipulator fed the stock back onto the market it was snapped up at fabulous prices. He made a fortune in a few days, Again the mine flooded and stocks dropped to a new low point. Again the manipulator bought them up at depressed prices. Again the pumps were able to clear the sump. Mining was resumed and stocks skyrocketed to add to the wealth of the manipulator, Several months later it was learned the conniving stock buyer and seller had discovered there was ahole in the bottom of Lake Tahoe that connected by a long natural underground tunnel with the Savage Mine sump. He had anchored a boat over the hole and with a powerful winch a confederate hadcontrolled the water in the mine by alternately placing a huge plug in the hole and later removing it. Had enough?? The Miners Paid A Heavy Price For Roast Beaver Tail In 1853 two argonauts panned for goldon Deer Creek above the present site of the Nevada County Hospital, Downstream a few hundred yards a colony of beavers had constructed their dams, One of the gold seekers learned during a trip toNevada City that a beaver tail, properly prepared, was a great table delicacy, Weary of their diet of beans, bacon and sourdough bread the
two panners decided their menu should include baked beaver tail, They hurried to the dam, removed their clothing and armed only with hunting knives, they plunged into the reservoir above the dam. But the canny beavers were not to be captured, The exasperated hunters swam to the face of the dam and started tearing the structure apart. When they did not return to camp friends sounded the alarm and started asearch. Their clothing was found on the bank andit was assumed they had gone for a swim. Perhaps one of them had suffered a cramp and panicked and his companion had given his life in a heroic attempt to save his brother miner. Divers, called from Nevada City, soon found the bodies, An inquest revealed that both had drowned. Inaclose examination of the bodies the undertaker discovered that both men had deep purple indentations across their instep and the bottoms of their feet. The coroner wasrecalled to the case. Hisconclusion was obvious. ‘artist, The beavers, angered by the intrusion of the miners, had swum beneath them, grabbed the men by the feet and held them under water until they drowned. Moral: It doesn't pay to get beavers angry; not by a dam site, CAROUSEL Through December .».The abstract impressions of William Yates are on display in the Sierra College art gallery.
