q ¢ py ee oe Ks oe a a WES Sane * Thursday, July 29, 1948 $200 LICENSE FOR SLOT MACHINES At an adjourned meeting last Thursday night, the city council directed City Attorney W. E. Wright to draw up an ordinance which will license free-play slot machines in Nevada City. Wright had already reported that bona-fide "free play" slot machines. which did not pay off either in a receptable on the machine or in cash from the bartender, were not illegal under the present local regulations. A majority of the city council proposes that the machines shall pay a tax of $200,00 per year or $50 per quarter. Councilman H, F, Sofge, Ira C, Bell, and Thomas Taylor favored this tax. Mayor Arthur B, Innis declared it was excessive. ‘The council fixed the salary of the city attorney at $50 per month, The board ordered a portable air compressor from the Miners Foundry and Manufacturing Co., which -has submitted the lowest bid, A letter was dispatched to National Guard headquarters in Sacramento, offering to lease a portion of Pioneers Park for an armory site. *kekK EE * THE CONNOISEUR, PRIDE OF NEWTOWN A> large turnout of Post Office department employes and their families is expected to attend the dinner to be held at White Cloud tomorrow night, After the dinner, the famous track meet will be held, with the cravat connoisseur of Commercial Street, (Frank Stewart) running against the former. pride of Newton (John Webster). GRASS ae 7. purchene, Good» < BANK CHARGE CA 4 DA, the brown’s shop ¥ : Now that the first round of the holiday season is over we can get down to the serious business of Christmas, I just returned from the southland and they already appear to be in the middle of the season. Actually I guess we here are too but we are just not so completely commercialized as they are down there, My family had dinner on Thanksgiving Day at a dimly lit red leather palace
called the Huddle somewhere out on the San Bernardino Freeway beyond the family home at Rosemead Blvd, and the view out the glass front of the building was an enormous Christmas Tree of solid lights. It was impressive and beautiful but so out of place on Thanksgiving Day. I must admit it reminded me of the song "Silver Bells—It's Christmas time in the City" which our choral group is working on at the moment. But I am going to stand fast on the old fashioned idea of Thanksgiving first and then Christmas. It took me 12 hours to drive to LA in that horrible storm last Wednesday but I got home in only 10 hours, The storm didn't hit coming home until I was almost in Sacramento. When I arrived home tast Saturday morning there were Grass Valley streets all ready for Christmas, At least they didn't have their tree up yet. My trip to the South was an emergency and my husband and I had to miss our Thanksgiving celebration but with my shape who needs it. We have lots to be thankful for this year. No surgeries since last May and that's the best record my husband has had in five years, If there is still turkey available we will celebrate in a day or so, I think the best part of the feasting is the left. over turkey. It makes such delicious sandwiches and creamed turkey with all the seasonings reminiscent of the big feast is good too. REE KKRKEE * A couple of weeks ago seven Nevada County 4-H Clothing Project Medalists won special recognition from Coats and Clark Inc. It was wonderful to find among them ‘wo Rough and Ready club members, Miss Loris Best and Miss Teresa Small. Here I go bursting buttons again. and I haven't been a clothing leader for years, It was a most rewarding experience for me then and m2ke-: me fee] extra proud now, : 4 REHEERKEEE EE Orchids to Chuck Sheely for recognizing talent when he hears it, Maybe I'm prejudiced because I sing with them but I agree with Chuck, The Nevada County Newcomers Lyric Ensemble is a credit to the communit. Much of the credit, as Chuck said, for their excellent performance must go to Mrs, Helen Beatie of Rough and Re}; who is their director, Another member of the group who contributes a great deal to their success is their patient and talented accompanist, Mrs, Meda Snow of Cedar Ridge. Credit too must be give to the Grass Valley Elks Club who provide a centralized place for the group to practice each week. Rough and ready's other. contributions to this group: of about 20 voices are Mmes,-Fay Dunbar, Barbara Miller, Beulah Shearer, Olyve Simmons, and Elaine Vogt. — pene = KKK E When I gave you the list of new Grange officers last week I missed the new gatekeeper. Frank Binder of Rough and Ready Road will tend to the chores of this office for 1970. Officers for 1970 for the Nevada County Gra:zes will be installed at Banner Grange Hall on Sunday, December: 6, at 2 p.m. The Grange Public Party held the second Sunday of each month will be held December 13 at the Rough and Ready Grange Hall at 1:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Refreshments are served and an afternoon of fun is provided. Donation is 50 cents. ‘ KHREKKKA EE Big event in town last week was the opening of our post office in its temporary quarters. Postmaster Mrs, Helen Avery invited everyone for 10 a.m. coffee and doughnuts and there was a goodly crowd, including some out of town visitors, to watch the christening. The champagne bottle was stubborn and finally had to be opened and just a little poured on the new quarters. Uncle Sam's mail arrived while the crowd was still gathered and neighbors had a chance to visit and sip cahmpagne while waiting for their mail to be distributed, Doughnuts, including purple ones, were served by Mmes. Joan Mader, Mary O'Neal, Barbara Sailor, and Helen Steele. Rough and Ready loves a party and certainly has some unique ones. Only thing missing at this one was speeches and official brass. KK£EKEKKEKHK E Watch at the post office for the date of the community Christmas. party and tree lighting ceremony. Details have gotten all fouled up and simply are not available at this time. It will probably be before next news day. While you are waiting you could get your own outdoor lighting ready. The chamber is giving its living tree award again this year, There are three categories, best lighting, childrens, and religious, Last year's awards went to the Bert Spaites for best lighting, the Ken Beaties for childrens and the William Hardins for religious, Judges last year were Bill “Cramer and Orin Brown who are pany Sow trying to locate a community tree for this year.
