New Consent Plant Opens In No. Calif
REDDING---Big wheels
began turning today at the
firstnew cement manufacturing plant to be built in
northern California in nearly
_ & Quarter of a century.
The occasion was the fir-.
ing of the 425-foot long kiln
at Calaveras Cement Com-.
pany’s streamlined plant 12
miles north of Redding.
_The Flintkote Company,
of which Calaveras is an operating division, has inves~ted $15,000,000 in the ultramodern plant now in final
stages of construction. The
plant will have an annual
production capacity of 1,5000, 000 barrels of cement a
year. Most of its equipment,
including the kiln, is electronically controlled,
Flintkote vice-president
Wm, Wallace Mein, Jr.,
who also is president of Calaveras, joined Grant W,
Metzger, Calaveras vicepresident in charge of production; and JamesC, Curry,
manager of the plant, at an
informal kiln firing ceremony today at ll a.m,
Unlike most cement plants
in the west, the. Calaveras
installation will utilizea
“day” manufacturing process
in which no water is mixed
with raw materials as they
are burned and ground to
make cement,
The 1200 -ton revolving
-kiln -18 feet 6 inches in
diameter at iti feed end and
12 feet in diameter at the
point of discharge -will
make one complete turn
every 5lseconds, During its
warm-up period, however, it
will"creep"at a much slower rate,
Mein estimates that approximately two days will .
be required for temperatures
to be brought up to 2700 de-~
grees Fahrenheit, This is
heat enough to melt steel,
a temperature necessary to
bring about the chemical
changes in limestone and
shale which are essential to
the process of making cement,
Calaveras w i11 stockpile
clinker produced by the kiln,
with initial shipments of
finished cement scheduled
for some time after the first
of the year,
WORKING PRESIDENT.. «President-elect
Tom Yost of the Nevada City Chamber of
Commerce smiles as he plans for new and
greater promotions for 1962. Yost will be
