"It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas” in Rough
and Ready. The community tree is up and glowing and a beautiful Santa is there with his sleigh and reindeer, Next door to
the tree, at the chapel, and across the road, at the shopping
center, the Christmas lights are twinkling merrily. The "Old
Gentleman" himself came last Friday night to the 4-H Community party with gifts for everyone. The Jack Shaffer's have
lighted a big outdoor tree which can be seen from the entrance to town. The beautiful lighting effects which come
into view at the top of the grade are the K, Wilsons’ on the
Rex Reservoir side and the B, Spaites’ on the Rough and Ready
Road side of town, And now Christmas. lights are beginning
* to show in many of the home’ windows. And now I know it's
time for me to get busy and get that Christmas tree I've been
dreaming about.

About 20 young people from the Grass Valley Methodist

of good fun and fellowship. They spent their time making cider
riding horses, and baking and eating the crisp little delicacies’
called rosettes. Making cider isn't an. everyday experience.
Mr. Bursill manned the press while the youngsters cut apples .
and drank the finished product. It was a wholesome outing, *
They ended the day with a visit to one of their number who

Nation’s Oldest Trees
WASHINGTON, D.C.—The
oldest species of tree in the
United States is the bristlecone
pine, which dates back more
than 4,000 years. Coast redwood, once thought to be the
oldest, is no more than 2,200
years old and the fourth oldest
species in California, the National Forest Products Association reports.
The Nevada County Planning
Commission has approved a petition by Alta Sierra Ranclies,
Inc, for exceptions submitted
with tentative. maps of Alta
Sierra Estates units 14A, 14N,
and 14C, but property owners
voiced their concern and a desire for time in which to meet
with the company and talk things
over.
Donald L, Miles, who lives
in Alta Sierra, told the com-.
mission Monday night he and
other residents would like to
know why the exceptions are necessary.
And Planning Director Bill
Roberts explained that the people
“are concerned with the lot sizes
that are developing. He said
this could come. before the commission as a matter of rezoning.
Miles said, "As it is now,
we feel we are not being represented, and we need time.
We don't have time to get the
real estate comminssion to back
Us up")
Assistant County Counsel
Brian Bishop suggested that the
people “concerned contact his
office, and Miles agreed.
Chairman Bert Livingston
said ‘the commission wouldn't
. deal with the. tentative maps
until Jan, 8,
In other business, the commission approved the tentative
map of Martis Valley Estates,
a development of 117 lots east
of Brockway, Truckee, C.S. Beavers owner and subdivider.
The commission voted to recommend to the supervisors for
approval a .
tions submitted with the tentative map of Sierra Meadows Unit
3. Sierra Meadows Developers
tition for excep.
is owner and subdivider of the
187 lots on 70.9acresonthe west
side of Brockway Road.
The use permit application of
Edward Boitano was continued
until next meeting, Boitano
wishes to construct, operate and
maintain 30 cabins in an unclassified zoning district on the
easterly side of the access road
to Orchard Springs picnic
grounds and boat ramp.
“Hal Cox, sanitarian, said that
until the health department sees
plans for sewage, it will issue
no -permit, ‘He said he does
not see how the property will
support 30 cabins and a restaurant,
Water supply and sewage are
problems, Cox said.
Other objections include. a
poor road and the expected i.crease in traffic generated by
the cabins; the small area (1 1/2
acres) that wotld cramp car and
trailer; removal of evergreen
trees for construction of a cafe;
the possibility that the cabins
might become a slum if used
the-year-round. .
The commission decided to
send back to the Advisory Review _Committee the petition for
exceptions submitted:‘with the
tentative map of Wolf Mountain
Vista, approved. the’ final map
of Western -Lakes Properties
unit 2-D, and approved a use
permit allowing for parking and
occupancy of a trailer to house
a watchman at Kingvale,
Coast redwoods in California

than 1,500,000 trees, or enough
for aisolid' row rom New York
